My electrical fun continues.

I replaced the sony am/fm cassette deck with a new (well refurbished) Sony AM/FM CD with Aux Jack as an upgrade. To my disappointment when it came i saw that I would not just be able to plug in the new on as the harness plug had changed since 1995 when the boat was new.

Seemed simple enough to me to install i just cut the plug off of the old harness and matched up color for color the wires from the new harness that came with the unit. I crimped everything up real nice and to my dismay it will not even power on.

I have triple checked and am positive red is to red, black is to black, etc. Even if there was a speaker issue or wiring issue etc I would think the red and black being right would let it power on

Does it sound like i just got a defective head unit or am i missing some wiring issue here. Interestingly under the dash there is a factory harness where all of the speaker wire comes up, then there is a seperate black box with the black and yellow wires going through it where there is a fuse inside and a small round thing (looks like a small cylinder, i am an electrical idiot so i do not know what to call it, a capacitor or something) then the red wire is on its oen and there is a fuse box for that as well. All of the fuses are fine etc

Fact is that the old stereo powered up fine, all i did was trim the plug off and match up the colors, what could be wrong.

As always thanks for the help

Dang Robert, you are having some wiring fun aren't you? Look for a yellow wire Robert. For test purposes, connect it with the red wire. If this works, you need to take the yellow wire to an unswitched 12v source. Your red is probably to a switched 12v. You can leave the two together, but you will lose your radio presets each time you cut if off. I think I stated this correctly.

Re: New Stereo will not power on

When you say coneect the yellow with the red one do you mean have the red and yellow spliced into the red that goes into the harness that came with the deck so in effect i will have two wires tied to one??

Also i am interested as i think the yellow one used to not be connected with the old setup, i just matched it up yellow with yellow

Thanks for helping, please just clarify what i am connecting right now i have red to red, black to black and yellow to yellow. I want to make sure i am understanding correctly.

Also i am not sure what switched and unswitched mean

Thanks a million,
Robert

You need both the red and yellow hooked to positive. One feeds power to the amp and memory and should be hooked to constant 12 volts, and the other signals the stereo to turn on)think turning your car on). I can't for the life of me remember which is which.

On my boat, the switched power wire is hooked to 12 volts that is switched by the master battery switch, and the constant hot is fed off my battery one bus that is always hot for the automatic bilge pump etc. This provides the power needed for the internal amp AND maintains my presets, clock settings, etc. IF you hook the yellow and red together to a switched battery source, you'll lose your presets when you switch the main battery switch off.

Older stereos without presets and eq's etc did not use the constant hot wire.

Re: New Stereo will not power on

I swapped the red and the yellow and it powered up and worked, however as soon as i increased the volume to a reasonable level it cut off and went dark then made a set of 3 beeping noises, i was able to reconnect it two times after that to "reboot" so to speak, the third time it just shut off and never would come back on after even waiting 30 minutes.

I unplugged the harness so it would not drain the battery but here is the current setup:

Yellow wire on plug into back of sony headunit is connected to the red wire from the boats wiring

Red wire on plug into back of sony headunit is connected to the same red wire from the boats wiring

Yellow wire from boats wiring is idle and not in use

I am now at a total loss and going nuts, what gives???

The three beeping noises on a sony head unit means the unit has been turned off, or you're losing power somewhere.

I would also not trust that the color of the wire means anything. I would always trace to see where they come from or go to before I wired to them. For example, if one of the wires was powered and you connected it to your speaker output, you cold blow the outputs of your stereo.

I was up on the docks until after midnight and have traced everything, it is all correct. Also recall it was working properly once i used the yellow and the constant power supply, as soon as it was turned up it would kick off and doing a series of three beeps. I know that means the head unit is protecting itself. I just do not know why

Did your older stereo use common ground to the speakers? The newer stereos have to have ground and positive run independently to each speaker. Protect usually means that there is a short in the speaker wiring. Using common grounds will do this.

It may be not getting enough power through the 12 volt connection.
You could do the Test wire trick to the positive battery post with the yellow-red connection.See if it still cuts out.
I always wire my stereo direct to the battery. The newer high wattage units may draw too much from the dash connections.
Just an idea..keep us posted..:)

Never seen a newer Marine unit use a common speaker ground. The boats fiberglass...not a very good conductor...
