Hey Cazman - My son is 7 (almost 8)...so yes I get the pride in ownership. I let my son do quite a bit of work in the resto. Sanding, painting, choosing colors, carpet...tons of stuff. He even spent his own money to buy a fish finder. When we hit the lake he takes such care of the boat. One of the best things I've done with my son :D.

Now the little bugger is showing me up when we go bass fishing .

Enjoy the ride...

Re: New Starcraft to us

Cazman welcome to the forums! It's always nice to see a new Starcraft owner finding THE best location in the world for info, best practices and...well...just to BS about boats and have a few laughs:p

I think it is VERY cool of you to give your 9-year-old the old rig...I'll bet all his friends will be red with envy when he talks about "his" classic boat restoration.

Even more cool is the fact that you are spending time with him and teaching him that good things come to those who spend hours of hard work in the driveway/garage until the boat makes the grade.

My oldest son will be 4 next friday and he loves helping me sand a little wood here and there and always wants to get his little ladder out so that he can see what I'm tinkering with inside my old tin can:D

I can't wait for him and his little brother(1 yr) to be able to do a bit more to get involved with my various watercraft projects(canoe, 12' tinny, possible SC from craigslist).

With any luck we will keep Starcraft's on the water for another 100 years, sometimes I imagine getting a 1989 SC Islander in the coming decades and calling it a "classic SC" LOL

Good luck with the project and let us know if you need to ask questions or just rant like Rick does about things the previous owner had done(ask Rick about wooden stringers screwed down from the underside of his hull:eek:)

Saw some of the pics on the picture thread. Looks good. I might start a new thread next week to track the resto.

LOL Ya'll enjoy your youngins while you can :D. My Youngest is 14 and not one of them has volunteered to help with anything on the boats thus far ( other than using them ) .

Cazman et al

Save your money, the Meguire's super vinyl cleaner did not touch the grime on my rub rails. Will use it later after my new seats get surface grime. Also I went to TACO to see what they have in the way of a replacement rub rail and I cannot find one that matches the profile of my aluminum slot.

The magic erasers do scuff up the vinyl a bit so you might want to do a test spot first. I am suspending the cleaning till I see how the vinyl restoration stuff works on the part I have cleaned.

Rickairmedic, you there? Is this the kind of Trick and Tip you had in mind for your thread?

Albert I am sure I will be adding a tip on masking for paint to the tips and tricks thread since I had a bugger of a time with my first attempt at masking . I learned alot through that phase of the resto :D.
