I just picked up this Starcraft for my boy and I to restore. We just joined the forum and plan to spend some time here before we begin. I have no idea what model this is. It is 15' long and rated for 50hp max. Does anyone know anything about this boat?

Cazman welcome to iboats and since you posted pics :D The Starcraft club :D. Your boat is by size and color combo either a Jet or Jetstar . The only differance between the 2 was the seating . Theres some brochures floating around here for the Jet and Jetstar . Make sure to start a resto thred over in the resto forum and check out the Trip we are planning for next summer for all the Starcrafters :D.

Thanks for the info. I guess I should have said that it is Aluminum and has a 16" transom, but it looks like you knew.

Do you know if this is a short shaft?

good lookin boat! welcome to iboats and to the starcraft club! We have taken over here like weeds!

rick mentioned a get together next year, depending on where you are you should make it! Its going to be quite the showing of starcrafts... some masterpieces, others 6 week restos in the driveway by amateurs (me).

us starcraft guys are a pretty tight group, most on a first name basis. our wives are about to start a support group to stop us from buying/working on boats. it would also be good to put your location in your profile so everyone knows where you are from, and kevin can tease you by posting ads for 22' super sports in your area :D

Re: New Starcraft to us

Welcome to the Starcraft owners group. I just bought a Jet like yours. Yours has the original seats! I am jealous. If you go to bananaboater's listings you can see some pics of mine. I want to see more of your boat so I can compare it to mine. I just ordered some similar seats but went with individual seats up front and the bench style aft. Am considering a bimini top and would like to see yours up.

I need to replace the flooring, mine actually looks original but I will find out more after I take it up.

I'm excited to find another boat almost like mine, my transom may have been replaced but if it was they did an absolutely excellent job by replacing the aluminum at the stern. Mine takes a 20 inch motor, very unusual for this model, most are like yours with a dip in the transom giving a short motor style. My pics show the straight across transom.

I look forward to sharing with you. Congratulations on the purchase.

Re: New Starcraft to us

Trying to add a page from my 1964 Starcraft brochure of your boat. May not work, will get to you some how.

The range of HP motors is 30-50. Mine has a 1961 Mercury 400 (45HP) and it still runs great.

Does yours still have the serial number badge on it? Mine is gone, perhaps when they modified the stern.

Re: New Starcraft to us

I was glad to see your "restoration" classification of what you and your son want to do with your Jet. I see three levels of boat restoration. One is to restore it to original, one to do a "modification" restore and third to make it your "own" boat.

I come from a museum background and in that world we try to keep as much of the original with all the "warts" the object has acquired over the years. It gives the object its history and character. For my '64 Jet I am taking a track between original/modification. I don't have deep pockets so instead of having a marine upholsterer recreate seats like your originals I bought Wise seats with a similar pattern and they only came in red/gray, not red/white. And I went with individual seats up front and a bench in the back. I don't want to climb over a seat back to get to the stern.

I will replace the floor this winter and keep it as original as possible. My brochure shows a white floor with a dark speckle pattern. I will experiment to see if that works but if not I will go with something different. It is brick red now.

At some point in my boat's history the front seat mounting board was replaced but the rear one is original. I will replace the front but use the back one again. My deck was repainted to a red wine subtle flake and I will keep it instead of going back to the original red. I may or may not paint the hull. It is in fair to good shape. It was repainted probably when the deck was.

I have a 1961 Merc 45 HP motor that works fine. For me finding a marine mechanic that wants to futz with a 48 year old motor was critical. I was lucky to find one just 20 miles away. Parts are still generally available. If you want to keep it in the 1960 vintage those motors often turn up on ebay.

My Jet has a replacement Teleflex steering. Much better than the old pulley system but you may have to change out the steering wheel. For me that change is OK.

I looked at your pics closely and saw that there was a full cover at some time. Snaps are along the gunnel, windshield frame and splash pan with a frame. Did the previous boat owner (PBO) give you any info along with the boat? Pics, owner list, etc. Mine did and I have a binder with all that stuff in.

You will find others on this list that have only kept the structural integrity of their boat and made everything else to their own liking. None of the three approaches is right or wrong, just personal choice.

What ever you do keep the safety factor in mind.

I plan to join those at the Starcraft "Tin Stock" at Lake Anna in Virginia in June, 2010. To share our restoration processes and see your boat in person would make me happy.

I am currently trying to find a suitable vinyl cleaner for my rub rails and windshield seat. I googled and found someone using a Mr Clean Magic Extra Power Eraser. Tried it and it works but be careful around shiny surfaces. At $1.75 per sponge it could be expensive to do what my boat needs. Waiting for my delivery of Meguier's super vinyl cleaning juice. That is next attempt.
Plan to retreat the vinyl with protectant after cleaning.

This is a rewarding effort and I'm sure it will be a great project however you go. Good luck, Albert

Re: New Starcraft to us

Hello Cazman.

Welcome to the forum. I am one of those "Jet owners". Below is a pic of when I first rescued her. She was used as a dumpster . I know the PO really well...and he had a ton of history on the boat (4 generations worth), but had no passion for restoring her. Bringing these wonderful crafts back to life is a labor of love...for sure. I am doing my resto with my son as well. Good times!:D I have TONS more to do with mine...but I have time:rolleyes:

YES - your boat should accomidate a short shaft OB best. Do your research before purchasing though. Finding something in the time period is cool, but it is a personal choice. Mine is a '61 Johnson Sea Horse 40HP. Runs like a tank...but you can't get some parts for it anymore. Give and take...that's all.

Have fun...read alot...and ask questions. There are some inspiring projects on this board...I'm sure yours will be one of them.

Wes

Re: New Starcraft to us

Wow! Talk about help. This is great!

Here is the story. My father lives in Old Forge, NY and tells me that a few years ago a buddy dropped off this boat for him to use. Well, he never did anything with it and it has been in the woods covered up for years (I thought is was a small 14'). My boy is 9 years old and "papa" says he can have the boat!

Do you know what happens when someone tells a 9 year old that he can have a boat? Well, to make a long story short, I dragged it out and brought home last week end and it is a better boat and in better shape that I thought. We are going to make a project of it this winter and restore it (I hope to original).

He won't be able to drive it himself for a few years, but it will be a nice project.

The condition:

Hull does not leak
Transom seems strong
Floor is solid
Upholstery is remarkable for a '64 (found the plate today), but needs work
Steering cables are shot
Needs topside paint
Needs good cleaning to see what else

I will add more pics this weekend.

I think you will have to come down with Andy to tinstock I bet your son would get one heck of a kick out of all the old boats that look alot like yours :D.

Great looking project...
We are all here for ya..any questions or issues that come up, just ask as most of us have been there or are right there with you as well..

What I'd like to see sometimes on "finds" like this are pics of exactly how she sat when you first go get her, under leaves, grass growing all over her..trash or whatever filled...

My project boat looked like this once:eek:
