Hey everyone,
last year i purchased a 1965 starcraft aluminum boat. not sure what model it is but its in decent but not beautiful shape. the motor is a 1999 johnson 50hp outboard. i thought it was a good deal at $400 with trailer. im new to this site and need some restoration advice. any would be helpful.

Thanks,
Jdude

Welcome aboard! Sounds like you got a STEAL if that engine runs! All of us here will be glad to help ya out, do you have some more info on it like length, open/closed bow, and is there a Coast Guard plate on her? The plate states max hp and such and often has a model name on it, my 1965 Jet's was on the left inside of the transom. These info will help every know what craft yours is. Anyways, again welcome!

Re: New Starcraft Owner

hey guys, thanks for the response. the boat is a 16 ft closed bow model. there is no plate on the transom that specifies the model or specs of the boat. the motor does run and very well. it had been sitting for 2 years before i bought it last may. after getting it home, cleaned the carbs and it fired right up. i replaced the floor because when i stepped into it i went through it. i did the floor with 3/4 inch treated plywood coated and sealed with epoxy and covered with carpet. it has been to the lake about 25 times last summer for fishing and tubing trips. the transom and steering cables need to be replaced before going back out. bolts for motor and handles on rear are pulling through the wood and dont want to have my motor be an anchor. already purchased the cables to redo the steering. other than that, here and there things will be replaced when money is available.

Your going to have a very nice boat when finished. I would suggest you get a new steering set up with a helm cable, its easy to do and a lot safer . That new motor needs a new friend for steering. Id also do the side panel while you have the transom work in progress. just my thoughts . nice boat. ------ pugetsound

Welcome to the Land of Tinnies, Jdude. A real nice $400 Jupiter. You said you used treated ply for the flooring. Pressure treated wood isn't good in an aluminum boat - corrosion problems. You might skate on the flooring, but for sure don't use PT for the transom. Keep the pics coming and keep on having fun with her.

Re: New Starcraft Owner

thanks guys,

the side panels are pretty solid, maybe a water seal and a coat of paint will do the trick. the plan is to start re-doing the transom on thursday. hopefully it wont be as big a pain in the rear as i think it may be. off to work, second shift sucks.
