Hi All ... New to the forum -- but find it very helpful

I just bought a Starcraft SS 160 ... its a bowrider with a 70 hp Yamaha oil injected 2 stroke.

I bought the boat last week and had it in the water at the cottage last weekend ... the boat is in great shape and motor runs very well.

I am trying to figure out the year of the boat -- based on all the google images that I looked at, my best guess is an 86 as the only other one i could find with the same color scheme is an 86 .. The boat has a blue hull, 3stripes with a baby blue interior (definately 80's looking )

on the passenger dash is a plate that says Starcraft SL Series and I havent seen that on the other SS 160 pics I have seen.

does anyone know how to determine the year of these boats ? the Yamaha motor is a 87 according to the model #.

for a 25+ year old the boat is in amazing original shape , and so far aside from a good cleaning , I haven't seen anything that I need to fix ... even all the original covers are intact

the motor has a broken skeg - but a brand new prop - previous owner told me he hit a rock . Any one ever try a Skeggard or Panther instead of having it welded?

also - motor runs fantastic above 1500 RPM but idles fairly rough - is that normal for these engines ?

how do I post a pic ?

thanks Bruce

Welcome aboard the SC tin division Bruce! Pics are best uploaded to photobucket and the image code copied and pasted right into the text window.

The skeg on my Mercruiser Alpha One has suffered the same fate and is about half gone. The options are pretty straight forward. cover it with a skeg guard for around 100 bucks, take off lower unit, gut it and replace all of the seals after having a new one welded on, or if you don't mind the way it looks, cut it smooth, paint and leave it short. According to the super guru's here (guys like Bondo) that skeg means nothing to the boat and you won't even know it's missing. Mine had a guard on it but it doesn't fit exactly right so I took it off and plan on just sawing off the jagged edge, sand smooth, paint and leave it short.

Forgot to mention, your rough low RPMs is most likely she needs a tune up, carb kits and a good decarb with seafoam.

Congrats and welcome to the starmada your application will be approved upon posting pics. To do so upload your images to photobucket and copy and paste the img code into your post, it is certainly the easiest way. We can sort out the year pretty quick do you have the Hull Identification number for the boat, it should either be on the title or on a placard directly on the boat itself. Rough idle usually means the fuel system needs a going through your pretty much have the perfect motor for that hull though. Congrats and welcome.

What year? Usually the last two digits of the HIN. And it is usually listed on the paperwork.

Hey BBF - She looks pretty good on the water. Seats appear to be in good shape too. Is she running better now?

Some people including me, swear by SeaFoam. Buy it Walmart. Put the whole can in the tank next time you fill up.

I'm think that is a 3 cylinder engine, correct ? It's "big brother" (90 hp) is considered to be the best 2 stroke in the range of 50-100 hp. Good engine.

I would suggest replacing ALL of the hoses and the primer bulb during the off season. Also empty and clean the oil tank and pump. These are "normal" preventive maintenance on any outboard over 15 years old.

You can get it in an aerosol to spray into the carb while running

And in a can that can be poured into the gas, like pre-mix, but not in lieu of 2cyl 50:1. Works w/ the gas to reduce carbon build up, so in the gas NOT the oil. 2oz/gal if pre-mix gas, 1oz/gal if oil injected motor (which is not pre-mix).

Very nice 16SL BB, just a little sister to my 201, but in way better origional condition. My experince with the Yamaha triples is very strong running motor and reliable as all get out,but they have a lumpy idle no matter how much you tinker with them. A decarb will help a bunch and then always run a little Seafoam in every tank to keep it all clean.

Okay I'm jealous all these nice looking Starcraft's showing up. That interior is really sweet looking. I probably won't show your pics to my Admiral as she would want me to redo our SS to be all plush and comfy like yours! Just kidding! That is a great looking SS though.. Great find, someone took good care of her it looks like.

Also :welcome: and have fun with her..

If the engine starts and runs, just dump a whole can in the gas tank.
