We live in Tampa Bay area but traveling to Orlando area next weekend to visit with friends and thinking about taking boat along. Closest beach too them is New Smyrna. I did a little bit of web searching and people talk about disappearing island but not even sure where that is. Not looking for crazy speed runs, but some chill boating. Anyone live or boat in that general area have any advice for places to go, things to do and ramps?

Attached is a screen shot of Disappearing Island. The red circle surrounds the island, the blue circle surrounds Ponce Inlet. There is a lighthouse directly to the north of the inlet and a CG station on the south side of the small beach there. N represents North (duh!)

Ponce Inlet separates New Smyrna Beach on the south from Daytona Beach Shores on the north.

As far as a ramp, you can launch in NSB on the south causeway or in Port Orange at the west end of the bridge. As a matter of fact, you can launch across the river at the lighthouse, but your boat ride would last 5 minutes!

We are at the island every Saturday...on the south side of the island, right where the access canal comes in. Check the boat name in my signature and if you see me, stop in for a coldie!

We've been there the last two weekends. Plan to go tomorrow perhaps after checking out Mosquito Lagoon down South. To the OP, you are describing DI in your requirements, ie "chill"!

If you have a GPS...... +29? 4' 13.36", -80? 55' 38.49"

Point A is the ramp and B is the sandbar.

One more thing, every OTHER weekend the island is at low tide approx middle of the day. Tomorrow is the OFF week. Next weekend it should be a good weekend again.

Didn't make it over there today but we explored Mosquito Lagoon and a bit of the Indian River over by KSC. It was fun, but I'm a bit worn out from driving. Lots and lots of no wake zones, about 10-12 miles I'd estimate. It's a lot easier to just get up on plane and GO. Getting the driving thing figured out. It may use more gas, but when in the heavy chop, I got the nose of the boat up, right before the point of getting up on plane and the ride was MUCH smoother. Debating whether or not to take the boat out to DI tomorrow. I have to pack for a trip.

We spent all day Ssaturday at the island. Water was 83 and there wasn't a cloud anywhere near us. The island wasn't crowded at all. Burgers, dogs, keilbasa on the grill...cold beer and music.

Absolutely a perfect day!

Wow, I'm kind of suprised at all you guys going out there.

I knew TD went out but I haven't heard of others.

As stated above if you go to the south side of the island there is a nice deep channel which makes it a lot nicer because you don't have to worry as much about the tide going out on you and being left high and dry. It's also the more family area.

The north end has a stage and that's where the party is-

This was Sept 5th Labor Day weekend on the South side. Heard there was going to be some music, a stage, etc, but the only thing I heard were the radios. We had a good time. The weather started getting ugly so we took a ride. Came back by and the island had disappeared. Where'd it go?

When its not football/cheer season, we typically hit DI on Saturday and the St Johns on sunday to flush the salt water. We put in at the south causeway ramp. I think we are going there next Saturday the 18th, we dont have a game. So if anyone is up for a day on the water we will probably be there.

I was there the two sundays before labor day. Sunday of labor day was the mountain bike race "8 hours of labor" in Alachua ( just north of Gainesville).

August 29th we were on a friends Proline, it rain when we left the south causeway ramp so we went to Inlet Harbor for some drinks to let the rain ease up and the tide to go out so there was a island.

Hung out on the south side towards the west till around 4:30

Next time you're out on the island, look at the south side for the float. It's the only one there like it. Come introduce yourself!!

How is the water. I hear it is realy rough due to the hurricane. If someone can say otherwise, we will be there. If not we will be out on the St Johns river.

Unless something has changed, you cant get in and out of there at low tide. At least we cant. We have gotten stuck there for hours before. Being a Sunday, we have to be home early so we can recoup for work tomorrow.

We are just gonna run up the river and let the kids play on the tube and skis. Then hit Castaways in Astor for lunch. We will try again next week.
