NEW RING JOB?

I have a 1967 EVINRUDE StarFlite (CLEAN) w/many new parts.
80 HP OUTBOARD (I’m told the better model) :)
MODEL# 80793R
SERIAL# E034
ELEC.SHIFT
Years ago...Out of the repair shop for a sparkplug re-coil, head gasket, and diagnostic checkup.
Compression test was reported to be good. Off to the water the engine ran like a bear, but lost
significant power on the water, but it got me back, limped. Dockside it would NOT re-start after
being off. :( Could NOT get the engine to start. It sat for a long time, over which new parts were
installed and parts were checked/rechecked. My son began tinkering on it last summer with the
advise of a friend he did/or/added something to improve compression temporarily. ...Anyway my
son got it up and running, it sounded GREAT! The thermostat opened as it should, the engine
was allowed to idle for about 20 minutes and was turned off. After turning it off, once again it
would NOT start. Not for anything this time. So I’d like to get someone to put new rings in it for
me. What I’d like to know: “Can I have the original standard size rings installed? Walls cleaned up
w/new gaskets? Good to go? (The engine had very little use/wear)” I’m NOT mechanically
inclined to do this job, I want it done right. Where do I find a trustworthy mechanic that knows
how and what to do? How long should it take? What should it cost? Where do I purchase and
whats a good price for new rings? Gasket kit? Anything else needed?
I have the service manual and parts manual. Any advise would be gratefully appreciated.
I’m NOT going to give up on this engine.
Thank you, BIGGJOE smoothbella@netzero.com

Re: NEW RING JOB?

Why not get or borrow a compression gauge, take some readings and post them here, lots of people here have experience with the older motors and will let you know if thats your problem.
