just covering the intake on the drive is usually not deep enough to prime the impeller.
i/o setups were designed with this level of water at startup (or close to it)

need a pretty deep tote to recreate that - thus the use of muffs and garden hose for on-land starting

Re: new pump?

another reason most pros don't try to do anything with antifreeze during winterization, except maybe pour a cup or so of the low-tox rv stuff through with the drain plugs out to verify visually that water all drained through. In that scenario, the amount that would be recovered would likely be less than a cup, and if you start the boat on muffs on the driveway, and your runoff goes onto the lawn or somewhere similar with vegetation, I suspect environmental impact will be near zero -better than just dunking the boat in the spring and putting that cupful in the lake.

agree on not getting in the water. but was trying to capture the antifreeze iput in. put muffs on and caught it in big plastic tub. not winterize ever so have lotys to learn. thanks. did open drains and let water out but was not sure it all came out. better safe than sorry. lots to learn.

Re: new pump?

Were you using non-toxic pink antifreeze, or conventional automotive stuff?

IMHO, trace amounts of any antifreeze left isn't going to hurt much.
