Ok, the floor is out, presure washed almot all the dirt is gone...

2 questions...

1. should i keep the foam? I can let it sit in the Sun for a few days and dry.. i have the floor out rivets out and have cleaned the inside.. i am looking at using a aluminum and plastic laminate 1/2" for the floor instead of 1/2 plywood ($66.00 a sheet. i really don't want to do this a 2nd time... and from what i can tell it is lighter that a 4x8 sheet of plywood.

2. The Gas Tank. what can i do w/ this damn thing. it looks to be in good shape. i just want it cleaned so i can re-plumb and save some floor space.. Ideas, links to someone who can refurb the tank ( I was thinking can i have this think hottanked like an engine block?) that would work out sweet it so....

If the foam is wet, it won't ever dry out. I'd replace it with the pink or blue sheet foam from the home centers. That stuff will NOT absorb water. Or some have been know to use pool noodles :) (me). I have no input on your proposed deck material as I am not familiar with it. How is your transom? On the gas tank, from what I understand, any good auto radiator shop can clean up fuel tanks.

Thanks Guys

EZ, you are correct for that reason the foam came out today, and man it was still wet and heavy, good call. Went to a dealer today, $150- to clean the tank, still need to stop by that radiator shop.
Still looking for a sample of the composite decking when I see it I will post w/ pictures.
And for some reason I hadn?t taken a good close look at the transom, well it will need to be rebuilt also. Hopefully I can get this thing buttoned up by Feb sometime when the Big Reds come to the cape.

If you can demo the boat in several days it should be no problem to rebuild in 4 months????? Thats the fun and easy part. Glad you asked about foam I rebuilt a 16 SS in May and the foam was about 200 #s of extra weight.

Re: New Project, 88 SFM 160

Can someone tell me why the foam is needed, seems to me that the only time it would come into play is when the boat is underwater.

Now i can understand some sound deadening but flotation??

My simple mind doesn?t see how it helps w/ flotation while it's in the normal working attitude.

When the boat is sinking the foam actually stops it from sinking, ya know?

EZ may be along to post a photo for ya so you can have a visual;)

You're correct. It doesn't. The idea is that if the worst happens and you get swamped, you have this:

to hold on to and possibly salvage as opposed to it sinking to the bottom like a rock.

Re: New Project, 88 SFM 160

LEVEL FLOTATION is defined as "that if a boat was to take on water and become swamped it would stay in an upright position in calm seas. The US Coast Guard requires that all boats under 20 feet in length provide level flotation"

Starman, I'm sure that you are not suggesting that adding foam on the inside of the hull adds buoyancy........

as opposed to no foam, same boat, no flotation.

Not suggesting anything.

If your comment was based on the text that I subsequently deleted about some boats looking unbalanced at rest/dock, well, that's weight displacement(heavy aft/engine) versus lighter fore/bow weight. Maybe mine sits level because I added more weight with my bow conversion plus 24v of batteries?

Thank-you gentlemen, I get it !
The foam goes back in..

What really drove the point home were Ez?s and Kev?s pictures.
Kev, you?re a clever guy, I like it.. Thanks.

Re: New Project, 88 SFM 160

another parable that demonstrates the benefits of LEVEL flotation:

http://forum.sancarlosmexico.com/view_topic.php?id=9041&forum_id=2&highlight=no+sniveling+sharky+tow

imagine trying to hang onto this hull in bad seas.

this was a friend's meticulously maintained boat. note the part in his narrative about 3 minutes from when they first noticed they were taking on water until boat rolled over. he's convinced me that a life raft is necessary option on every boat heading 5+ miles out. how far from shore do you Grt Lakes guys go? what's water temp? how many minutes could you survive at that temp? enough to swim to shore? food for thought.

Re: New Project, 88 SFM 160

Well took the transom out this afternoon. i was a bit hesitant about taking the rear-end apart to replace the transom. I was getting ready to disassemble that thing. Got to thinking about maybe I could get some blueprints for the boat and make the task easier. So I call the factory thinking this was a slam-dunk. Well not so, they just don?t give out such material.
But?. I was connected to a gentleman, which I can?t recall his name at the moment but have it written down at the office. He was kind enough to proceed to tell me how it was done and save me a TON of reassemble time. He was also kind enough to provide his direct line in case I had further questions.. I thought that was kind of cool.
Anyway here are a few shots of where i?m at so far.

I found a material today that I think I would like to use instead of wood, it?s kind of pricey and was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions.
COOSA BLUEWATER 26 SERIES COMPOSITE BOARD - Bluewater 26 is Coosa?s strongest and stiffest composite panel with the highest strength-to-weight ratio. This board offers 26 lb. density per cubic foot and is 30% lighter, or more, than plywood. Bluewater 26 is used for structural components such as transoms, bulkheads, flooring, and wall units.

Thanks?.
