Had the Crestline Fish Hawk 1650 SC in the garage all winter. Put it in the water yesterday. Was driving it to the dock and it started screaming a steady non-stop alarm-like noise. The motor also bogged down. Today, I putted around for 10 minutes - no noise. So I gassed it and it immediately made the noise. I turned it off and back on - just putting tback o the dock. After about 2 minutes - the noise. Off then on. Got to the dock. Put it in neutral. Was tying it up while idling. Again - the noise. It sounds like the noise is coming from the console. It's horrible. Thoughts?

I can add a couple things. I checked the oil and it seems clean and full. I'm not much of a mechanic and even less with boat motors. But I can usually do anything if there's a Youtube video.

do you have gauges that indicate what alarm is happening?
probably overheat or low oil pressure
my guess is over temp
it is never a good idea to keep running a motor that has a problem.
you should shut down the motor as soon as possible to try to correct the problem.
was the tell tail showing good flow?
some times debris covers the intake.
when was the last water pump and stat service?

I'm learning from the internet stuff I didn't know. I hope I haven't ruined the motor. If the tell tale squirts water from between the motor and the lower unit, no - that's not happening. When it idles, there is a lot of water moving around the lower unit.
I don't know the service record. I bought the boat last spring and used it last summer.
I thought alarms were like beeps - not nonstop shrieking.
Unfortunately, the boat ramp is a quarter mile from my dock. Do I have to paddle it all the way?

Step #1 is to have a look at the water pump impeller.-----A golden rule is ---" Install a new impeller in a new to you boat motor "------Still amazing how many sellers will demonstrate that motor starts / runs and without cooling water to the impeller.

#1 - Paddle or tow the boat to the ramp, put it on the trailer and bring it home.
#2 - remove the lower unit and look at the impeller.

?? - right?

thanks.

when you start a motor make sure the lower unit is in water deep enough to cover the water pump not just the intake screen.
Do not start motor out of the water unless you hook up a set of muffs and turn the water hose on full blast.

every time you start the motor look and make sure the tell tail is showing the water pump is pumping water.
if it is not turn the motor back off to find out why it is not.
sometimes running an piece of weed wacker line up the TT to see if a bug has built a nest up inside will help.
compressed air can also help clear the line some times

if an alarm sounds or the RPM reduction mode happens shut down the motor as soon as you can in a safe place(do want to get run over by a barge or other vessel in the cannel)
a troling motor comes in handy and a membership in sea tow is nice to have.

if the locals are friendly most will give a tow for a short distance, but some will not ruin a fishing trip just to tow you back to you dock or ramp unless they were headed back that way already

All good knowledge to have, however would the motor be overheating if only the TT was plugged? Doesn't the alarm indicate there's a bigger problem?

you are correct, it should not overheat if the TT is just plugged, but you have no idea if that is the problem or not, unless you check it out or run it until it does overheat

You said the noise is comming from the console. Can you post a video of the sound? As others have suggested I'd replace the water pump regardless.

OK. I've got two symptoms. No water from the tell tale and the very annoying alarm. I'm getting towed to the boat ramp tomorrow. I'll bring it home and drop the lower unit. We'll see what that impeller looks like. Thank y'all for the help. I guess I'm about to become an outboard mechanic.

OK. I removed the lower unit and the waterpump cover. This is what I found. Do you think I found the problem?

I ordered an impeller yesterday and received it today. It's not a Yamaha. It was tough to slide onto the drive shaft and tough to get into the pump housing, but I got er done. This is what it looks like now. Is that spit supposed to be coming out the front?

I sure hope you can find all the pieces to keep from having plugging in the cooling passages and overheating problems

I hope so too. Some of the larger pieces were up by the impeller. Many smaller pieces were down by the intake. I was glad to see they were going south.
