New motor!

After some recommendation from another thread I decided to get at 6 HP long shaft motor as my back up motor for the river. I got lucky and found a really nice 1979 6 hp Johnson right up the road from my house. It had new fuel lines and new fuel pump already on it. I rebuilt the carb, installed new spark plugs and installed a new pull rope. I have an impeller on the way. She'll be ready for fishing season. 90/90 compression and STRONG spark.

Hopefully it's a tame river, wouldn't want to rely on that little beauty in a " hey I think we are going over the falls" condition!

Smaller size craft I hope ?

if you troll big lakes a nice humming 6hp is great and generates less fumes from a back wind & noise. Set it straight with the friction bolt and steer with the big guy

Isn't that the actual definition of a kicker? If you have it mounted on your transom alongside your main, then it's a "kicker". If it's not mounted, then it's a spare.

I had that exact same motor as my kicker on a 16' deep V fiberglass runabout. Mine was s short shaft, though. It was mounted next to my 75 Johnson Stinger.

You know why I had that kicker? Because the main broke down once on the Niagara River in sight of Niagara Falls. That part of the river has a very hand bottom and trying to anchor there ain't easy.

Pretty slow current on the stretch I fish. It get really fast and really shallow further down. I have to drag by foot to get back up that part.

Been boating since the 1950's. AFAIK, the terms are pretty universal.

A "Kicker" is a gasoline powered small motor mounted on the transom next to the main. Some people use them for trolling, with a secondary purpose as an emergency backup. Regardless of one's purpose, it's on the boat and ready to go at all times.

Optionally, some boats are equipped with an electric motor, usually mounted on the bow, and almost exclusively used for trolling, thus aptly called a "Trolling Motor". That said, though, many of the newer higher powered ones can be used for emergencies as well.

To further complicate things, "Trolling" has different meanings as well.

When I drop my kicker and set her to 1.9 mpg I throw a long line out the back with a plug on it and I TROLL for muskies. Alternately, when I'm moving along the weed beds and casting with a spinning rod, I use my electric foot pedal mounted trolling motor to move around in all different directions.

Thus, when your fishing choices vary, having a troller and a kicker on the same boat is the cat's meow.

I have an e-tec....because I fish and boat mainly in Puget Sound (don't know where that is? Look it up, Puget Sound in Washington state) and the Pacific Ocean I mainly troll with my big motor. I always have a "kicker" next to the big motor just in case the ocean wants to slam me into big jagged rocks where these guys live.

The motor will push the boat at about 6.5 mph. When we go fishing we run at about 1/4 throttle to make the lure attract fish. 1.9 mph is the ideal fishing speed, not what the motor is capable of.

Nice catch. We are in fresh water. Keeps the boats and equipment in nice condition, but our catches don't compare.

Our required speeds are slower than the Mercruiser can handle. That's why the 9.9 'Rude came in handy.

Even a 10 year old can join the fraternity....
