First of all, nice boards here and I'm very impressed by the quality of posts and posters here, thumbs up!!

I'm looking at going whole hog on a new 21-24 O/B Walkaround or going used for a shorter coin center console. I still prefer to surfcast and it might be hard for me to justify 350/month (justify to myself - the wife already thinks I'm nuts}... Anyway, I'm intending to fish somewhay nasty saltwater between Cuttyhunk/MV/Block/Watch Hill so reliability & durability are a must, good economy helps too (can't afford the Yamaha 4 stroke)so I have two quick questions, almost like a quick poll:

1 If you were to buy a new 150-200HP OB what brand would you buy and EFI or fancy EFI

2 If you had to go used 125-150Hp, what would you say the most reliable OBs have been over the past ten years or so...

I know I'm asking alot here but can you spare a guy a dime

Striper John,

Depends on where you live. Which dealer are you most comfortable with? Who's going to care a wit about you when your engine grenades?

The others said Yamaha. Ok, they're good, but it isn't worth anything unless someone will back it up.

I'm pulling for the new Johnson and Evinrude. They have the dealer network and are weeding out the bad ones-Bombardier.

Japanese? read these forums more before making your mind up.

I'm a J & E guy, from the get go, that has owned about everything-Suzuki, Honda, inc.

Stay U.S.-Mercury has some fine engines too.

Re: New Motor / Used Motor

Thanks for the words... I've been out of the boating game for a while and out of the outboards for much longer.

Problem is, many dealers I've seen couldn't wait to switch to Yamahas from OMC but I can't figure if it's because of the motors or because of OMC's bad handle on things. Now that Bombardier has them, you'd think things would be better but they are just getting their arms around things now too. I've also heard people rave that 2000 and newer FICHTs really are good motors. I'd rather row than push a Suzuki from what numerous people have told me, half based on horrid support. And Honda has nothing in my range (yet)...

I'm also wondering if it's worth it paying the premium for HPDI/Four or Optimax.

As far as buying American? I'd rather do that seeing that all of new cars/trucks are made in USA (although my favorite reel is from Japan) and I'd rather contribute ot our economy but I can't afford to o/haul frequently for patriotism's sake if a motor is a P.O.S....

Thanks.... and keep 'em coming

Sorry for the multiple posts but this board doesn't let you "EDIT" a post...

Rex, good irish name too - What motor do you recommend? and I think the word you're looking for is "HICK" not "HILLBILLY" but why would anyone want to give you a good Stern Kick, eh?

If reliabilty is your primary concern, twin Yammy 90's....Or twin whatever is within the budget. It's costly, but nthing beats the reliabiltiy of twins.
