Hello all,

I reside in NY, but I will be doing almost all of my yearly boating in Connecticut. I am not sure whether I should register my boat in NY or CT. New York sales tax is i believe 7 3/4% and CT is 6%. I would save a good amount on the sales tax if i register in CT, but is there some kind of yearly property tax i would have to pay on the boat?

I am not sure how the property tax in CT works. Also, is there some kind of annual fee i would have to pay for the registration process?

Please help all.

Thank you.

Re: New Member - Registration Question

Welcome to Iboats!

If they are like most states yes you will pay property tax to the county it is registered in.
I know in my state you have to show ID as to where you live or have a physical address. That is how they determine what county and the tax rate.

Not sure if registering in another state would work.

Also in my state you can register the boat for one year or pay for a 3 year sticker, that works out to be less expensive doing the 3 year.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...

Of course there are Fees in about every state,...

As to your questions,...
I'm guessing it comes down to how Ct. defines resident....
I know Ny would love to take your money either way, or Both ways....

Re: New Member - Registration Question

To get a definitive answer you'll have to check with the registering authority in the state in which you are a resident. In my neck of the woods, there is some reciprocity between bordering states that honor each others registration, but only for temporary periods of time, e.g. my boat is registered in SC, but I can take it to GA for like 2 or 6 weeks at a time before I would have to have a GA registration.

Boat registration laws are like most other laws...there is probably not a lot of flexibility that would allow you to choose which state you register in based on better economics...murphy's law says that it will be the most inconvenient and expensive option.

Re: New Member - Registration Question

According to CT DEP website...

If you live in another state and operate your vessel on Connecticut waters for more than sixty days in a calendar year, you will need the boating certificate. You will also need a Certificate of Decal (which is handled through DMV.)

The boating certificate it is referring to is the safe boater type of cert...the cert of Decal is probably what you are going to need. Check the CT DMV site for info on that.

Hope this helps...

Re: New Member - Registration Question

as posted above;60 days in ct, and thats the boats home.
thats pretty much how it is in utah where our boat in slipped. must be reregistered in utah with utah numbers and stickers.

funny thing about that though,is, if it were in dry storage on the trailer (in utah also) could still use co. numbers and registration

any way good for us in that we now have a title, utah, for boat.
didn't have title before as co doesn't issue titles for boats.

Re: New Member - Registration Question

most states require in state registration if the vessel is in that state for a certain time.... in water or on trailer makes no diifference... EXCEPT that if it's on a trailer the water patroll won't notice it while cruising the marina slips.... my 10' jet boat is reg in TN and I live in IN... It was less than 1/3 the price there.... I never go to TN but since it's trailered I can get away with it easily.... Just register it in which ever state is cheapest or consider yet another if saving money is the goal.

Re: New Member - Registration Question

I will have to see what the fee's are for the certificate of decal and how often it has to be paid. If it is a one time payment for 3 years, then i have to do the math.

I wish someone who lives in fairfield county CT could give me the exact rules.

Thanks all.
