A few questions about my new-to-me 25 hp sportster. I haven't tried to start it yet but it looks like it hasn't been too long since it's been run. It turns over ok....feels like it has good compression. I might try to fire her up in the morning unless somebody stops me. I'll replace the oil in the lower unit first though. She was a salvation army donation and her hull's solid...built in 89-90.

What year is my kicker?

Throttle is hard to increase...decreases easy...is there an easy fix?

What's the correct gas/oil ratio?

Is there a secret starting routine?

A few pics below....anybody out there recognize her?....nc registration....i'm near charlotte.

Thanks jasper!...that was quick.

I just, moments ago, refilled the bottom end with gl5...it was dry. :(

Prop engages and turns when i pull the cord though. Maybe i'm ok. Is there a replaceable shaft seal ? There is some oil on the outside of the lower unit and i'm hoping it just leaked out while in storage.

Yes, a gearcase seal kit is available right here on iBoats.
Are you sure she will run?
Have you checked compression and spark?

Thanks, I'll order the seal kit as soon as i figure out what else i'm gonna need :) and compression "feels" really good. Haven't checked for spark.

I haven't attempted to start her yet. I replaced the fuel line from the connector to the filter yesterday since it had cracks (haven't pumped fuel to it yet) and bought a new fuel line assembly for tank to motor tonight. All was dry inside when i replaced the fuel line but i could smell gas and it wasn't the old stale gas smell fwiw.

I plan to go fill my tank with five gallons of 89 octane ethanol free gas and tcw3 @ 50:1 in the morning....maybe give her a pull if she pumps up tight.

I guess i ought to lube the cylinders first huh?...i'll do that.

Ok, i'm also going to need a fuel pump. I pumped fuel to her and it leaked like a sieve from a crack in the filter housing which has been overtightened.

Looking on iboats, i can't seem to find a pump assembly for this motor...i think i need omc equivalent to 0388685....can someone help me out? I'm trying to fill up my shopping cart. The 18-7350 looks right in the picture but description says up to 15 hp.

Someone asked the same question for a '76 25hp Evinrude.
From what I gather, 18-7350 or 18-7351 will work...

Ok, i'm getting ready to push the button on these

Do you think a guy with "slightly above average" mechanical aptitude might be able to successfully swap these parts out without a service manual?

You shouldn't have any problems. Get an $8 spark tester at the auto parts store before going with the ignition tune-up kit. You may still need it but if it jumps 7/16" you'll be fine.

Carb rebuild is never a bad idea. I just started a '77 9.9 Evi (after 70% tear down) this morning after 5 years dormant and she sang.

You'll likely have a lot of questions when it comes to the lower unit and there are plenty of guys here with experience there.

*Do not remove the wrong screw!!!

You're probably too late....I already removed two on the fuel pump. Odds are good one of them was the wrong screw and I'm doomed.

Changed-up on my plan a little this morning. I ordered a fuel pump from another source after getting a delivery estimate of eighteen days from iboats. I'm anxious to hear this thing sing a little.

I'll look into the spark tester....you're right (if I read you correctly), I probably should take this more on a one-step-at-a-time approach and not disturb everything all at once if I don't need to.

Re: New guy with old evinrude...

Yea! I got my fuel pump in the mail today. Replaced the fuel lines and put tat baby on.

Motor started on the fourth pull. I ran it a while in my trash can and it idles well. Put it in gear and all is well....bumped the throttle in gear and she seems anxious. I may have to venture to the lake and let her stretch her legs a bit in a day or two.

Next, seals and impeller....do ya think i need a water pump....there seems to be plenty of water coming out. I also found a used t'stat in the boat....there's been some work done obviously. Hopefully no harm done.

She sounds great. Yea, I would change water pump if you don't know when it was changed last. One less thing to worry about. Thanks for sharing.

Re: New guy with old evinrude...

Just an update, and a couple questions......
Took off the lower unit and installed a waterpump kit and a lower gear case seal kit. Reloaded the lower gearcase with Pennziol Marine GL5 and started her up yesterday.....everything seems to function fine.

I've got about a 40:1 fuel:eek:il mix and she produces quite a bit of smoke. I'll add sone gas to the mix to get closer to 50:1 but, I'm wondering. If I have excessive smoke, what causes that if not too much oil in the mix?

I bought a carb kit but haven't installed it yet. Is she just running too rich maybe? Will a good woorkout reduce the smoke?

Also, I plan to change out the Pennzoil Marine GL5 (after a good trial run) for Mobil1 synthetic GL5 that I have leftover from a diff change I did a while back......Is there anything special about the "marine" GL5 that would prevent me from using the M1?

Re: New guy with old evinrude...

When you get the carb is dialed-in right, it may help some, but I wouldn't worry about it.
Once on the water, you won't notice it much.
I heard some say synthetic oil smoke less, but I haven't tried it.

Marine or outboard gear lube has properties that allow it to stand up better
to moisture penetration.

Glad to hear things are going well. Thanks for the update.

Re: New guy with old evinrude...

Many new to outboard tend to freak out too much about the smoke. The thing to remember is that they only burn what you feed them, not like a car engine.

I have a special "carb/engine blowout" mix I have to use occasionally that I only burn out on the lake because of the smoke. You'd think the motor was about to explode but it's the exact opposite. Once your motor is broken back in you'll be able to adjust it so it's more efficient and whatever smoke (or oil dripping down the exhaust shaft) will tell you what's going on inside the pistons. You'll get a feel for it over time. These older motors are all unique to themselves and there is a bit of a learning curve. In my opinion, it's a great excuse to spend more time out on the water in the name of "research." There is only so much you can learn from the barrel and the muffs will only tell you that the parts move on their own.

Re: New guy with old evinrude...

I'd run it a bunch on the lake before messing with the carb.

Also you are better off by running it out of the water on muffs rather than in a trash can. A 25 can blow the water out of a trash can quick.
