Hi:

I'm in the middle of a deck replacement (my first time) and have a question for all of the deck replacement experts...

I'd like to through-bolt the seat pedestal to the new ply decking, then install the decking. However, I can't decide if this is the right way to do the job since I'm then going to re-carpet and will have to cut the carpet around the new pedestal...

Should I through-bolt (with a backing plate and locking nuts) prior to installling the deck, or use toggle bolts after the deck and carpet are in place???

Also, I plan to 'glass in the edge of the new decking to the hull - but which fiberglass should I use???

Lastly, I'd love to hear opinions on whether to replace foam before or after putting the new deck down.

All opinions are valued. Thanks!

safetyman

Safetyman,

I would drive "nutserts" into the bottom side of the floor boards in the pattern of your seat pedestal bases.

Nutserts are nuts that are made to be driven into wood or metal. The have bolt threads on the inside and some type of gripping pattern on the outside, depending on being used for metal or wood. They will be flush to the top surface of your floorboard.

Re: New Deck Questions

While you have the fiberglass out you could drill the holes for the seat and fiberglass the nut to the bottom side of the board. Then you can just stick the seat bolt down into the nut. THIS WAY HAS NOT BEEN TESTED. but it should work. good luck

Re: New Deck Questions

For the seats I glassed 2 piece of of 3/4 plywood flat inbetween the stringers then layed the floor on it. Now you have about 2" thick piece of plywood to screw into. Just use lags or 1/4" screws. No way your going to break them loose and no need for nuts. I have used the t nuts b4 but it is hard to find stainless one. Also if they are the least bit crooked you will cross thread the screw then your screwed on that one.
