Hi all, im a new boater bought a used 14 ft aluminum boat with a 9 hp mercury motor i went to my lake today to try it out, well with my luck our public launch was closed so i had to go to a small little launch with shallow water, i unloaded the boat and everything and tried to start the motor, it would start a bit then die down and release smoke from the exhaust, i suspect that the water intake part(i dont know where it is) wasnt in the water (the water lvl was up to the propeller i think) because when i bought the boat the guy turned it on infront of me, i hope i didnt dmg my motor by doing this and thnx all in advance :).

If the guy that sold you the outboard turned the engine on in front of you and this lasted for more than 10-15 seconds, you will likely have a damaged impeller. The water intake is under the plate that is located on top of the propeller.
This is how the mercury 8HP works:

(1) water enters from the water intake (as explained above)
(2) enters the waterpump (located inside your lower unit)
(3) The water is pushed inside a watertube thanks to the impeller and makes its way to the powerhead
(4) in the powerhead the water goes inside the exhaust, waterjakets and then partially exists the telltale on the right hand side (when facing the engine) and part of the water exits the exhaus port located on the center front of the engine.
(5) I suggest you getting a owner's manual before even trying to touch the engine.

Have fun!

No he had it in a pool of water, yea know thati look at where the water intake is the motor might not have been submerged enough, when i tried to turn it on it would start for around 5 seconds and stop do u think that has damaged the impeller? I did it maybe 3 times.

Your engine could not possibly get damaged for running 1-2 minutes without water. Only if the enfine overheats, the the pistons might get damaged. So your engine turns on, but then shuts-off....
Before it turns off does it spit and sputter, or just shuts off? I was thinking that you might have a fuel line problem, such as a hole allowing air in the gas stream, or a debrie or clogging of some sort. Second, you should remove the intake on the gas tank and see in what condition the intake tube is.... it might have fallen out! You will likely need a philips screw driver and see in what condition it is.

What i do is to mount my mercury on the boat and get a garbage bin full of water and then test my engine. To me it seems you have a gas problem. Do you leave the choke closed? Did you squize the prime bulb (on the gas like) till it hardens. Also, check the direction of the prime bulb arrow, as it should it should point towards the engine.

Its weird, because the person who sold u the engine made it work and not it does not.

I'm just guessing here,as the problem can be anything, even the spark plugs.

Let me know, and I know how frustrating it can be at times to fix those engines, but once they go, good luck stopping them!

Oh and also the cut is big enough so that when u pump gas into the engine some of it sprays out.

If the cut in the hose is big enough to leak gas, it is probably sucking air into the motor and shutting it off. Try taping the hose with electrical tape for a quick check. If motor runs with cut taped shut, replace the hose with a new one.
