Hi I just bought a 76 silver line and it needs to be restored. I am looking to do it myself. I found that the last owner said he replaced flooring, but when he did he screwed through the hull. I though it was going to be an easy fix but when I pulled out seats and ripped out flooring. I saw that he had put old ply wood down and screwed it in with 2 I n screws. when I ripped out ply wood I noticed that the fiberglass was water damaged, meaning it was cracked and had holes in it. On top of that the inside of hull the wood was water damaged and tearing out easily. I am wondering the best way to fix and restore this. All opinions and advice are welcome being that I am a new boat owner. I will post pics soon as I figure out how to haha. I am also new to posting in forums.

Thanks
J.Oliver

Hi and welcome to the Iboats.com dry dock, J.Oliver...
Start here for a ton of info...
http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...r/how-tos-other-great-information-288451.html
Once you get some pics up and we can see what you see, we'll be able to help you out...
In most cases, and depending on the design of the boat, you will end up replacing most, if not all of the structure with new materials...
What you will end up with in the end is a much better built boat than the manufacturer ever could have built, that will last the rest of your lifetime, and then some, if you care for it, and will be extremely proud to own and enjoy!
Best of luck and have fun!

I am sure I will have to tear out the whole inside and replace everything, which is fine I already started that process. need to know best way to start and go about the whole project from here. Also attached is another pic of the inside where fiberglass is warped and shows the rotted wet wood underneath

You might be able to do the restoration on the trailer, but you might have to add some extra support bunks as the hull will become quite flimsy when you start removing structure...
It is possible to replace sections at a time, but having to grind out one bad section, finish it, then grind out the next, and so on can be quite a pain...
On a small boat, most guys build a cradle to support the hull, tear everything out, grind and prep, then rebuild...
In most cases easier access is made by removing the cap...
I am actually getting ahead of myself here...
First thing to do is get a circular saw and set the cutting depth to right at the thickness of the deck...cut the deck off within about 2-4 inches from the outer perimeter...
Once that's done you can thoroughly inspect the underlying structure and know what's really ahead of you...
There may be hundreds of pounds of waterlogged foam and quite a bit of rotten plywood substructure, along with a rotting transom...
Or there may not be...once you get the deck off, you will know...
A free photobucket account will let you post pictures that don't have to be clicked on to be viewed...like this...

Re: New Boat owner wanting to know how to restore 76 siliverlne boat

thank you. I will check those out. I figured it would be a lot of work which is fine since I work at home. so I do have the time to be able to do that. I had a pretty good Idea that I would have to take the cap off. so my next question would be How would I go about doing that? Also I will set up a photobucket account so that nobody will have to click on the attached file. From what is see at least the top layer of wood is water logged and rotted, but like you said until I strip it down no telling how far it goes. I will now check out what you told me to get a better understanding of what work I have ahead of me. Thanks again for the info highly appreciated

Tagging along and will try me best to help steer you in the right direction whenever I can. Starting the resto is a daunting task but you have the best support network on the web here to back you up.

Re: New Boat owner wanting to know how to restore 76 siliverlne boat

So here is an update as to where I am. I have ripped out most of the deck tore out the foam and cleaned it up some. the only good thing about it is the foam and wood was so water logged and rotted it came out really easy. I will upload pics hopefully I can do it right from my photobucket lol. I am having problems getting it from photobucket so will post pics like before for now until I get it figured out I changed all settings but it still wont let me upload them that way. decktoreout1.jpgdecktoreout2.jpgdecktoreout3.jpgcleaneup1.jpgcleanedup2.jpg....I apologize for doing it this way just don't have to at the moment to figure out photobucket. I would also like to know the easiest way to get the starboard and port side of the deck out whick tools would help ease the job and whatever other advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated

In Photobucket you should see four link windows. Click the IMG window and copy it's contents. Return to iBoats and Paste the IMG code into your iBoats post. Your pic will appear full sized.

Like this? lol sorry just been a long day. I am also wondering if what you see in the pics if that is bottom of hull and that the stringers are that small? If so will be nice since I can then see how much wood I need to rebuld stringers and deck

Here is what I did so far as ripping out the foam which was pretty easy since it was so water logged. what would be the best/easiest way to get the stringers out?

Nice I thought so. Just seemed not deep enough but then again it is only a 16 ft boat

Re: New Boat owner wanting to know how to restore 76 siliverlne boat

Some use a reciprocating saw with a thin flexible blade and get under the stringer, then cut along the bottom edges as best as possible...
Others use and oscillating tool, but I hear the blades tend to wear out quick...
Then there are the adventurous fools like me that used a 4" angle grinder with a metal cutting disc and cut along both sides of each stringer in the hopes of removing them mostly in one piece and not creating any additional high speed water intakes:eek:...don't ask me how this is possible...it is well documented early on in my thread...
:D

Awesome! thanks. yea don't think Im quite that adventurous yet being my first restoration and first time working on a boat, but will keep you updated with my progress as I go along. I am curious and trying to figure out how much foam I will need to get to fill between new stringers that I build? Its nice to know I have help and support out there when I first took on this adventure I thought it would be way overwhelming but as I go along with it I am really enjoying it more and more

Measure the Height of your stringers, then the length, then the width between them and Post those dimensions. Then we can give you a real good guess-ti-mate on how much foam you'll need.

I am also wondering about the transom. If it is just fiberglass or if there would be wood in there as well and if so I would probably have to tear that out and rebuild it as well??
