Re: New boat owner and new Sterndrive installed, cooling questions.

I wasn't being facetious with "new":D, merely designating between 2 engines.
The pulley pump has nothing to do with an Alpha drive. The Alpha has the pump in the drive. The Bravo doesn't have any pump in the drive. The water passages in the Bravo are big (1"ID) so that the belt driven "pulley pump" can pull water from the lake to the motor. Alot of water gets to the engine.
You can go ahead put the thru-hull in, seeing as though you can't get in there to change a hose. Where are you going to put that? Are ever on a trailer? Have you ever "intentionally" put a hole in the bottom of a boat before? Even if you go with the thru hull, the fitting at the transom has to be capped off.
If you would understand the principles between the 2 pumps, you would realize what the difference is. Why 1 can but the other can't!

No, I've never put a hole in a boat intentionally or fortunately unintentionally either ;) It does make me nervous, but I've seen a couple good write up's on-line. I just want to get it right and be done with it, whatever is the best method.

I've just read that the Alpha one gen 1 outdrives (What I have, SE106 ) do not perform well with the Gen 2, Bravo or Alpha style motors. I have read that the Gen 1 motors have a different style of thermostat housing and some kind of T valve in the cooling system to work well with the different output of the Gen 1 alpha water pump. Because I have a gen 1 Alpha I am leery about solving anything by using that outdrive to deliver water to this motor that is designed for the high flow of the pulley pump, I think the thermostat housing and cooling setup is just designed for more volume that that little Alpha Impeller can produce no matter the circumstances. At least that is what I have read by doing some google'ing on mismatching a new motor with an old Gen 1 Alpha outdrive.

That being said, I still need to cool the outdrive and I still need to likely use the Pully pump in some way to get the volume of water I need. I have no idea what that means though as far as options. Maybe a Thru-hull with strainer for the pulley pump to the motor and the correct hose from the outdrive, plumbed in to the system as well, or capped off, or .... I really have no clue. Can I "tee" the Alpha output into a valve tot eh cooling system in the back, or maybe just cool the power steering and separate the loops, then where does it output?

I have no clue what the best idea or option is, but I am pretty sure neither just the Alpha pump, nor the current setup is correct, long term.

What if I just remove the Impeller from the outdrive? Could that just be impeding the Pulley pump from pulling up a good volume of water? Or could the Pulley pump pressure be causing Cavitation in the outdrive impeller or causing it to spin the wrong way or too fast/slow.

I've told you what you need! You need the $50 hose from transom to oil cooler! Your problem will go away.

Further more, it's obvious you don't have a clue. And niether do the people you have working on that boat!
