First the Good: I just finalized what I think is a good deal on a 1989 Invader v210 cuddy cabin powered by 5.7L Bravo 2 combo with 220 original hours on it (I know this is a weird combo for this type of boat but this is how it was ordered) Anybody have a Bravo 1 to trade for a low hour Bravo 2 . As I mentioned in other post on the forums the boat has been very well kept never left open to the environments and trailered all it life. All in all very clean solid boat. PO owner says it tops out around 50 MPH? We will see.

Now the bad: One of the metal line back on the Power Steering ram is completely rusted through and while the engine is running PS fluid leaks badly (btw the engine runs great and had good compression on all 8). Will a mopar 360 fit in its place  just kidding. I have already determined the PS ram will need to be removed which does not look to bad  I think . So here is my questions do I remove the ram and just replace the lines or replace the whole unit? (watching a couple on ebay) and will any MC PS Alpha/Bravo... ram fit? My research tells me they are the same for Alpha or Bravo but I know one of the experts here knows for sure? Which ever decision I make are there any other seals that should be replace while the RAM is on the bench? On last question there seems to be a newer style ram that does not have the tubes that corroded away. In this new style ram a direct replacement/upgrade or do other parts need to be changed or not compatible? I am sure I will have more questions in the coming weeks once I dive in to this?

My wife and I feel this boat will be a fun project and look forward many years of enjoyment. If I can get this PS leak taken care of in the next few weeks I might be able to get it out for a pre-winterize shakedown. Thanks in advance for the any advice.

Mike

PS Now anybody want a Stingray 18 ft bow rider 3.0l Alpha gen II, put in water, turn key and go. I don't feel like winterizing 2 boats :(.
Jasoutside has 2 boats one for small fishing and one for the big lake. I need one for skiing in the Navasink or shark river and the other for cruising Banagat bay and the Atlantic ocean.

Why not just replace the ps line? You can go to most good hydro line makers and have a line made in minutes. take the old one off and take it to them first though. A helpful tip is to cut the line off by the fitting and put a socket on the nut part and unscrew it. lots easier then a line wrench. @nd is i have the same combo, 1996 5.7 bravo II i would be interested in the outdrive for a spare. thanks dan 440-724-8491 dan.lubinski@oberlin.edu

I wish it was as simple as replacing the power steering lines to the pump. The corroded line I am talking about are actually on the ram itself and are called retracting and extending tube. See photo parts 2 and 3. The lines are not expensive the ram need to come out to replace them.

That is why I am thinking of just buying the whole unit on ebay $35 to $50 and just doing a swap. Not going to be fun but once I remove a cover across the back above the steering it should not be that bad I hope. I have done worse jobs on cars. All the parts look the same and carry the same part # as the ram in my 1993 Alpha drive. Worst case I will pull the risers which will give me a ton more room to get my arms in there. Its only held in by 2 bolts and a couple of pins. I was thinking it would be good PM to check the flanges and replace the gaskets as they have most likely never been off. What kind of boat do you have. The Bravo 2 Drive is a monster. Should have her home on Sat will post some pics

PS I sent you an email same name as above @ gmail

Re: New Boat New Problem, Bravo 2 PS leak need advise

Well I got the new toy home yesterday 12 mile tow home with no problems. Today I decided to tackle the removal of the steering ram to start working on the steering fluid leak. I figured it was only held in by a couple of big bolts and some clevis pins it should not be too bad. Wrong!!!!! The top bolts was a breeze as were the pins and the steering cable. Then I got to the bottom bolt and don't you know the Mercruiser tech that assemble the system bent both locking tangs on the lock plate one front one back (overkill if you ask me). So after removing the 2 rubber and 1 aluminum tube between the riser and the y pipe to give me working room I wrestled with the tangs for a couple of hours. I was able to get the front one but the rear AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I finally was able to bend the tabs that lock the plate to the transom housing and it was out in 10 min. :) The retract and extend lines were toast they just fell apart in my hands (is this common). Now as soon as the ram I ordered on ebay get here I can put it all back together.

Question once I re assemble everything what is the procedure for filling/bleeding the power steering system? Have a great night.

Mike

Re: New Boat New Problem, Bravo 2 PS leak need advise

After waiting a week for parts to arrive I have replaced the 2 metal line on the steering ram and installed the ram yesterday. Filled the ps pump with fluid and fired it up no more s fluid leaking into the bilge. The engine sounded great and ran smooth although the tach is flaky and and the idle seemed a little high. I will bring home the old school service tach/dwell meter I have sitting on a shelf in my office and hook that up.

On the hose the motor ran at 145 degrees but I noticed the port side riser was much hotter than the Starboard experience tells me this is not good. Since I had to remove the exhaust on the starboard side I took the time to pull the riser inspect, clean and replace gasket although I planned to do the port side also I have not yet. I am going to pull the port riser this morning to see what it looks like inside. Starboard side was in great condition. I was hoping to fine the same results on the port side. Now I am not so sure. The Manifold and risers have NO markings/part# anywhere that I can find (un Mercruiser like) so I am going to assume the have been replaced at some point in the 20 plus years, also the gasket was not like the Merc part I installed. Will post my findings later. If I need to replace MC, Osco, GLM, Sierra??? recommendations please
