New boat installing trim switch and sender help

Hello all, I am new here and have ran into a wall. I just purchased a '79 Sea Ray SRV-195 that needed some work last weekend. One of the things that needed replaced were the tilt/trim switch/sender pods on the back. The person before me cut the wires on the interior of the boat. I think I found where the switch should plug into but the color of the wires do not match what was listed in the instructions and other posts on this site. I have a solid purple wire, and 2 solid blue wires that terminate to female plugs that appear to be the match for the male plugs that are attached to the pod (see attached picture). Is this the correct plug or am I way off base? I cannot test because I am currently repairing the bell housing that had one of the threads galled out so I cannot attach the outdrive yet.

The larger issue that I am having is with the sender. The instructions just say that it attaches to the engine harness. The WSM and other posts on this forum says that it goes to ground and a brown wire with a white stripe. I cannot find a brown wire with a white stripe anywhere on this boat. I looked under the console but the only color wires I saw attached to the gage were a light brown wire (I cannot find the other end of this wire) and a purple wire with a white stripe that terminates to a splice at the transom (see second picture). the other wires all seem to be connected to something. Am I missing something here or did I suddenly go color blind?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am really close to getting this buttoned up and on the water and the last thing I want to do is have to tear the outdrive off because I fried these pucks.

Mods: I apologize. I am an idiot and clicked the wrong thread. This should have been in Merc not Volvo. Is there a way to relocate this? Sorry.

We don't need to know what the boat is, what we do need is engine and drive details. Boat's aren't like cars. The engine in a car is made by the car maker. You say a 1969 Ford Mustang and we know it's (likely) to have a Ford V8. But boat builders don't build engines, they buy them from outboard or stern drive manufacturers. You say 1979 Searay and it could be anything, outboard (Merc, OMC, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki) or stern drive (Mercruiser, OMC, Volvo, BMW, Yamaha)....

If the year of the engine is the same as the year of the hull (not always the case ;) and why we also ask for engine serial numbers) then you have pre-BIA wiring colours, and the trim sender colour may be purple, not brown/white.

It has a Windsor 350 in it. I have attached pictures of the engine and serial number plate. Serial Number appears to be: 4677439

Ford 351 (GM have the 350 ;)). The last year Merc used Fords was 1977, and that gels with the serial number.

Awesome. So would you know if I am on the right track for where I am thinking of plugging in my trim sender and switch even though the wire insulation colors do not match the book?

There is no provision for a trim gauge in the wiring harness. If you want to run a trim gauge, you are going to need to run a new wire up to the dash and connect it directly to the gauge. (diagram for your engine below)

Maybe I used the wrong term. The dash has an analog trim gage (dial, or something I will post pictures of it tomorrow) on it already (it looks original) and I think it should accept some sort of signal from the trim sender puck. However, thanks for the tables that looks to match the pictures if I am interpreting them correctly.

Does the dash trim gauge have a wire connected (apart from the power and ground)? If so, chase that to the harness connector on the engine, then to wherever that leads.

I was able to track it down and use a meter to check for continuity. Thanks for all your help the trim sender is now fully operational. I have the switch plugged in but will not know if it is right until I can attach the outdrive. Thanks for all of your help and sorry for any obvious questions. The different wire colors in the manual vs what I was seeing really messed with my head.
