I was watching discovery, or history channel lest night,(forget which). and I saw this show about a mega catamaran built in Australia. This is at least 500 ft long, maybe 1,000. And it is made out of aluminum. The thing that got me was that it had a planing hull, and could go up to 70 mph.
They had to try to keep things light, but the could acutally get on plane, which made it the most fuel efficent ship of it's size.
I consider this a major break thru, if we can get these ships up on plane, they will save so much fuel.
This was a ferry/car carrier, purchased by japan.
