New Age Grinding Wheel?

I was looking at the grinding wheels at Walmart and they have a new design out. It has what looks like little squares of hard 60 grit sand paper on it arranged in a stair-step fashion. Has anyone tried one of these on grinding out old fiberglass on the hull?

they are not very new. they have been around for a while now. i dont know how they do on fiberglass but i have used them on wood and they work really good!

but i had such good results with my 24 grit resin pad that i havent used it.

That sounds like it would absolutely EAT fiberglass. I bet it does work well.

it work pretty good. i perfer 30 grit sanding disc.

They are known as flap disks in the world of high pressure pipe welding, my choosen profession, and they are more for buffing rather than grinding. They do work very well and last a long time. Forget X-mart, if your looking at getting a quailty flap disk go to a welding supply store such as AIRGAS or Gases Plus. They carry or can order a wide selection of grits and types. They may be able to suggest one made for glass...

I just use the sandblaster line of flap discs from 3m, available at home depot, for fiberglass. For welding I'd probably get something special, but it's overkill for fiberglass. I do notice the sandblaster discs last 3x as long as the generic flap discs from places like harbor freight.

Yup, I'll rarely buy anything from them I need to depend on to work. I tried a harmonic balancer puller and stripped it out the first time I used it. I returned it and bought one from Checker Auto Stores for 2x the money, but it held up to an impact gun. Harbor Freight = one time use.

Like Oops, I use a 24 grit disc on an angle grinder, eats up the fibreglass and they are cheap.

Seconded for the Harbor Freight 24 grit - I used one when shaping excess epoxy on my jetski hull. They last a lot longer than I expected - I'm still on the original disk.

Be gentle - they EAT fiberglass. I wouldn't recommend doing this inside either unless you have a heavy duty exhaust fan. That was 2 months ago, and I'm still finding dust everywhere.
