Good afternoon everyone. I’m new here and semi new to the boating community. Experiencing my first engine problems. I purchased a 2006 Tracker 170TX for a limited horse power lake close to home. So I put the 2006 Mercury 9.9 (standard) on it with an 8.5 pitch (came with motor). Experiencing significant problems. Here we go.

First hour on water I noticed a small oil slick around engine, wrote it off as oil from manufacturing (not much). Also couldn’t get the RPMs above 2,600. Called Mercury and dealer and they said to check tachometer and make sure pin setting was at 6P. Well it was at 5P and changing it to 6P caused RPMs to drop to 2,200 but now idle is approximately 600 and not 1,000 (specs say motor runs at 5,000 – 6,000). Small problem as boat is 750lbs plus 2 middle age guys. Dealer is truly working with me on all issues, going to change prop to a 7. Boat will never get on plane.

Now for the real fun. Boat stalled while running with throttle open. Brought boat home parked in garage for a week and when getting ready to go out the following week noticed oil on garage floor. Again little thought as I did check the oil and all was fine. Took boat out with daughter for about 1.5 hours and the engine stalled 15 times at full throttle. Seemed like lack of fuel as I had to play with the primer ball to get the engine to restart and if I got to the primer ball before the engine stalled I could keep it running.

Well let me kick it up another notch. Brought the boat home and parked it in the garage. Went out into the garage two days later and noticed new oil stain, same place. Looked for leak and found it is coming from the engine some where above the oil drain. I continued to look around and found that the pull start rope was FULL of oil and it actually was seeping from the rope handle. Still leaking today, new stain about the size of a dollar bill after 12 hours.

Ok as you see this motor only has about 4 hours (max) on it. Any ideas on could be wrong? Boat is going into the shop this weekend but since motor is NEW what should I attempt to demand or hope to get in return? What is the chances it gets fixed? Yes it is under warrantee. That is why I bought a new boat and motor. Not sure I was very smart (LOL).

Appreciate any schooling and advice.

I had a similar problem with the 15 hp mercury. The fuel anti siphon valve was stickin. Tracker marine removed it and ran much better. Probably still won't get on plane with 9.9. Boat is too heavy.

Thanks for the information. I do believe some of the issues might be unrelated and we'll have to see. You are correct that this boat is too heave to get on plane, I knew that when I bought it. VA won't go upto 20hp on the limited hp lakes. I see my ex-state of PA did that a number of years ago. As many of us get a little older it more enjoyable to fish out of a comforatable boat.

Shop states they just corrected the problems. Three issues, missing washer caused oil leak, idle needed reset (stalling issue)and throttle cable connected incorrectly. Cable might be cause of rpm issue.
