Folks i have an issue with a rebuilt 5.7 4 bolt 880 block. Long story short old block which was newly rebuilt less than 10 hrs on it was sent back due to noise. I was given a reman 880 5.7 block. All parts bolted back in but there is an issue with the starter. Starter is new and was bought and used in the previous block. The issue is the starter when activated bumps to the flywheel and retracts. Starter works fine. I see more of a clearance issue. Even when i bolt it to the block 1 of the starter bolts butts up to the flywheel cover not allowing you to bolt it in properly. Now the question is what could be the issue? Engine was previously tbi and was coverted to carb prior to engine removal. Went from 5.7 to 5.7 should be no issues. Any ideas whould be appreciated.

Ayuh,..... Chevy starters only come in 2 flavors, straight across bolts or staggered pattern,.....
The flywheel diameter determines which you need,....

Even though it was the same flywheel and same starter used on the motor that was turned in? They both worked fine with one another. They actually played nice, no issues to report.

Maybe, what kind of noise was the first 10 hr engine complaining about..?

After a couple of uses it was a whining noise under load. Items discarded was, pulleys, outdrive and bearing. At the end it was determined to be internal from rebuild. Whent with different builder for this engine.

Both starter bolts the same length?

Something is odd. Could anything be bent?

No, single engine. The good thing is that engine is on test stand for first start. So far as per the flywheel part number its 3853958. Indicates 168 teeth 14 inches wide.

make sure you use the correct length bolts, a lot of these aftermarket starters use slightly different size housings and if the bolts bottom out in the block, the starter will twist under torque and break the bolts, putting you in a world of hurt!
This is an ARCO PMGR starter that I replaced the old Delco direct drive starter with...used ARCO's bolts...spins the engine over faster than any of the old style starters I used....

Was it a USCG certified Marine Starter?
Yes, black marine certified. This is as weird as weird gets. Same starter, same flywheel that where working perfectly together. The starter engages when power is applied but it hits the front of the flywheel then retracts. The bolts look fine. I did notice that the bolt that is oposite to the engine is butting to close to the flywheel cover. That wasnt and issue before. To the point that you can't fit a socket on the bolt. The only difference in all of this is the block. Old(new) block turned in was 2 bolt main and this is a 4 bolt main.
