I was testing my new motor out this winter and the hose was full of ice. I ran it about 3 minutes and the temp started to rise to the halfway mark then a puff of smoke came out of the exuast. I shut it down cleared the hose and started it up again. It seamed to run ok but for the first time ever the temp gauge was rising it, had never come off the low mark in the the last 2 years even before i swapped out the motor. Now the engine is bogging. I pulled the water pump to see if it was blown but it wasn't. Could I have blown a head gasket in a brand new motor that quick? Help

Be more specific. Which pump the engines curculating pump? or like Bond-o said the O/D pump? If you did'nt check the O/D pump I would bet 10/1 that it's fried. Alway ensure the water supply is more than pleantiful before stating the engine to avoid such mi-haps.

I pulled the outdrive waterpump and it was like brand new. I didn,t check the compression will do that this weekend. What I meant to say in the subject was that when in neuteral the engine bogs when I try and give her gas.

... was that when in neuteral the engine bogs when I try and give her gas.

How is that 'lost compression'? Maybe edit the title to read...Oh, I don't know... something like '1996 3.0LX bogs on acceleration'..

Im still trying to figure out how to use this site. (sorry)
When the incident accured I was testing the motor out with a garden hose and ears. My wife was working the nozzle on the hose and watching to make sure water was comming out of the engine, I fired the motor up and it ran for about three minutes when the temp gauge started rising and then a big puff of smoke blew out the exuast. Thats when I shut her down and found out the motor hadn,t been getting any water through the garden hose. I ran hot water through the washing machine outlet through the hose to clear the blocked ice and the fired her up again. It started her up again and got the water running through the engine again. Before that I hadn,t winterized the motor I was planning on do some winter striper fishing. The engine is a 96 Alpha 1 gen two 3.0xl. Ill pull the serial numbers tonight.

No water, big puff of smoke... Sounds like the exhaust shutter going south... If it was mine.. I'd be pulling the drive and splitting it and checking all the rubber bits in there and replacing the water pump impeller, gaskets and seals. Next I'd pull the elbow off and replace the burnt up shutter, and any other charred remnants...

Now, what's this about bogging? Have you had the boat on the water since and found this new problem? I'd start by doing a compression test.. Or it could be a clogged accelerator discharge nozzle in the carb, or the carb just needs a good clean out and setting up properly, or just new fuel filters. It may also be old spark plugs or a 'sick' ignition system (timing out, weak spark, bad leads, ect)..... And check the flame arrestor (on top of the carb) and make sure that's not clogged up

Explain new engine? Did you just buy a brand new complete engine? or did you rebuild your original? Or a long or short block. Or is it a new to you used engine?

My new motor is comple GM marine crate motor. everything except alt and carb came with it. Plus repaced elbow exuast and complete new intake manifold. The engine was ran through test for about an hour out of water an timing was fine tuned, acceleration was fine in neuteral at that point. None of these problems started until I ran it without water for 3 to 5 minutes.

Thanks for hanging in ther with me.

I didn't realize it was without water for that long.
Do a compression test to start with.
