Anyone here have a 228? I just picked mine up from dealer today and would like to compare notes. It seems to take forever to get on plane and seems tough to trim up -- very sensitive and likes to porpoise. Can't control the speed real well under 25 mph or so -- it will bust out of plane and start plowing. Full fuel, 3 adults and 4 kids on a boat rated for 12 souls...

Thanks.

Yes, its been said a million times on this forum, but I get to be the first....
Trim tabs.

Almost everything you complain of will be remedied. It has been hashed out many times before in the forums but almost everyone agrees they really help our boats. I can't claim to know which hull designs are more or less likely to benefit from them, but my boat is as big as yours and all of these issues went away after my install.

Yeah, I have been investigating those. Just having a hard time getting my head around why a manufacturer would deliver a boat that so obviously needed an aftermarket product to be usable. Guess they wanted to get the top speed specification as high as possible...

Its not a speed thing, the tabs will not slow your boat down. If anything it will feel more stable at those higher speeds. My 216 will get above 50 with or without trim tabs.

I don't think everyone notices or cares about the drive-ability issues you mention. For many a Tahoe is their first boat and I am guessing they think porpoising and wandering are all apart of owning a boat. Many here in this forum claim the smart-tabs should've been the first thing they did as they can't believe they tolerated the other problems so long.
I guess I don't know if this is unique to Tahoe or not, probably not, but I'm sure some other designs do have less issues. Most buy Tahoes for the layout and pricepoint. Yes, with a couple of cheap tweaks you can clearly get a very nice running boat for not a lot of dough. I don't know what the butt end of a 228 looks like, is there a good flat surface to mount them too?

Yeah there is. I read about the issues with some of the other Tahoes with the raked transom, but the 228 is about 10 degrees from vertical on the transom. My old boat had a whale tail that seemed to perform adequately but I think the tabs will be the first upgrade...

Smart tabs help but anything with a "planing" type hull will have wander at low speeds. The reason it wanders is the hull is designed to run "on plane" and to do this it has to pass the wave made by the bow and get up and over it. Dual prop lower units help with wander also.
