Hello all purchased my new boat and got $1350 in upgrades free by BPS mistake. I have not had any problems discussed on this forum since March and I was interested if anybody has changed to a K&N filter for the 3.0 and what SS prop will give me more speed on top end than the standard alum prop.

With 18' of boat and 135hp, I guess the next question is what is your RPMs? You don't have a lot of extra power to play with for top end. If you go up on the pitch for top end you will pull the engine down (RPM) and not have power to move the water... It's a balancing act between RPM and power.

Re: New 2009 Q4SS

Q5inOH, Thanks for the reply. I am running about 4500rpms WOT and GPs is saying 46.1MPH..pretty good with 3 people and half a tank. I like the boat alot but may trade up next year...for the q6..but I hate giving my boat away for trade. Should I at least change out the aluminum 3 blade prop for the same size SS and have you ever heard of a Cold Air Intake kit for the Mercruiser 3.0? I have put CAI on my BMW, Jeep, and Solstice and they really improved the sound and Horsepower...they are all EFI...my boat I think is carbed but air cleaner is restrictive stock and they have a K&N that fits the 3.0.

Your boat won't have a air cleaner to replace, it has a spark arrester.....totally different setup than a car engine in that aspect. I would say you might gain a little bit with a ss prop....but your not dealing with much hp to begin with, and buy the questions you are asking it WON"T satisfy your needs. If you want more power get the q6 next year and go with the 5.0mpi, as the 4.3 carbed is minimum for that boat.

Great to hear. How much more WOT RPM's and MPH are you getting? How much was the arrestor? Wonder if anyone has tried this with a 4.3 2bbl.

Re: New 2009 Q4SS

Alright after replacing the flame arrestor from K&N for my 2009 Q4 SS 3.0 Merc with stock aluminum prop I ran more test with the same load as above posts..was 4500 RPM's WOT GPS at 46.1 MPH water was real smooth as during the week at Lake Martin there is hardly any boats...to verify I did three passes with trimming out right before she porposed to find the sweet spot and the third pass had the water a little choppy and I was at 4600 RPM and GPS showed 47.8 MPH. The boat at idle when I first installed the flame arrestor sounded a little rough so I did adjust the idle screw a little higher and she sounds real good now at idle. I believe this helped alot and she justs feels more responsive and sounds mean. I think this about all you can get out of this engine and will continue some tests with different props and repost results. My mechanic even said he notices a difference as well. As for the cost it was only $85 and was easy to install.

How fast do you want to go. I have a 2008 Q4SS and it cruises at 4500RPMS at 40mph (as shown on my GPS), the speedometer shows about 45... at 5000RPMS it tops out at about 45mph (as shown on my GPS). This is plenty fast for me, and those that I tow behind it. I can tow two skiers simultaneously, and never need to go any faster, as the faster you go, the longer it takes to turn around to pick up your fallen skier. :)
