Re: never lend your boat!

My current boat I would lend to one person. My godfather could use it if he asked. He's CG certified, but definitely very green to launching, loading, and driving. I'd fully expect it to come back with a ding somewhere on it.

That being said, I'm about to spend somewhere in the range of 30-40k for a 25-27 foot WA. Nobody, and i mean NOBODY will be driving that but me.

Loaning folks stuff, especially boats, chain saws, pressure washers, etc., etc. is a great way to ruin your trust/friendships.

A boat I can understand, but a chain saw or pressure washer issue could end a frienship? Not any friends of mine - I'd take my lumps and move on because neither of them is (a) worth being miserly about with a friend or (b) losing a friend if he/she messed it up.

I loan my boat to my brother on a regular basis. The boat is a 17 year old bass boat that has seen some use. It always comes back clean, in good working order, and with more fuel than when it left. I also loan him tools whenever he needs then.

He is always offering his tow behind camper for me and my family to use. I appreciate the offer, but will probably never take him up on it.

I would loan my boat to anyone that I would give it to.

My father rented cabins out at the lake for years, and we supplied a small rowboat with a 1957 7.5 evinrude . the people ran straight gas through it . they said they were sorry . I was looking at one the other day and almost bought it , that was the most dependable motor we ever had

A chainsaw can end a friend...

I never lend my chainsaw till I see them crank it up and make a cut in my presence.

I have no problem loaning pistols to monkeys. I've never seen one yet that was smart enough to find any ammo for them, much less load them!

If you're not financially invested in the boat chances are you won't take care of it like the person who is. I won't lend my boat to anyone.

My friends are walking disasters...seriously. Not a single mechanics bone in there body. I lent a spare vehicle to my friend a couple weeks ago when his vehicle was in the shop and what does he do...runs it out of gas on the freeway and calls me to rescue him. I might be a car rental place but definitely not roadside assistance. I made his brother go rescue him and promptly repoed my vehicle when he returned. 2 weeks later he did the same thing to someone else's vehicle and now it won't start. This dude seriously has no life skills and it's kind of sad for my generation because a lot of people are like him.

Had he had some life skills he might have a job that actually pays some decent money and he would be able to afford a decent vehicle. He is still without a vehicle and getting rides from anyone he can. This was cool in highschool but he's 30 now.

Re: never lend your boat!

How did I learn never to lend out my boat??? Started with the small stuff, paint sprayer, drill press, misc tools. If my so called "friends" (well I mean acquaintances ) can't treat those items with respect and return them to me in the same condition they left my place, no way in *ell are they getting my boat.

I would let 1 friend use my boat. He's been boating since a kid and we were partners in a boat for years. No problem with him taking it anytime he wants.

Re: never lend your boat!

Let's reverse the issue. You borrowed someone else's boat for the day. You brought along your wife or girlfriend (maybe both), and the kids. Sure you know boating, right? But guess what, gauges are in different places, the boat has different characteristics, the trim works differently, the anchor is not the same type you are used to, and even though there are severaloter things to make you "relearn boating for the day", your family and/or friends also are exploring how and where to sit, stand, sun, and splash. OOOPPPSSS, accidents happen even though you are the experienced boater. Sure, you care more because you either own or have owned a boat, but this is not true for the character of much of society today, who are into "me, me, me". Living for the moment has costs. It is better that the bill is paid by the player than the lender played!

Re: never lend your boat!

I have friends and family I have no problem lending my boat to. And I've often used theirs. The differance here being I do the maintenance and repair work (labor part) on all of them. They in turn help me with mine (grunt labor) when I need it. Hell I have a buddys 99 Fat Boy in my garage that he encourages me to ride so it gets some use. I've put several thousand miles on it this summer alone. BTW his boat is currently moored at my dock and has been for several weeks. And I have the keys to that also.

Great points, but it still boils down to knowing the person. I dont think anyone would just let someone take their boat out that has never been on it or drove it in their presence before.

If someone is close enough that you would trust them with the boat, you most likely would have already been out with them. Possibly let them drive even.

So it still boils down to who can you trust and how well do you know them.

I don't value gadgets more than people. I'll lend anything I have to qualified users. Telling my friends that my stuff is more important than them is not the message I want to send.

Re: never lend your boat!

I have one and ONLY one friend I would trust with my boat, my wife, or my house. He started out as a friend to my brother, then an employee of my father. To me he is my brother from another mother. He's a boater and a mechanic. The amount of money he's saved me on vehicle repairs over the years paid for my boat 5 times over.

When we went out last weekend we towed my boat with his Explorer which is way more comfortable then my non AC F150 for the 3 of us. He drove it about 1/3 of the time. 1/3 of the time we taught my wife how to drive the boat. I know if his boat was not useable and he wanted to use my boat I would have no fears whether it is my 16 foot runabout or a 40 foot ocean cruiser. If something broke I know he would fix it.

I have no doubt he would let me use his boat as well. When he swapped a high perf motor into his 67 GTO he came by my mom's house to show us that it was FINALLY running. First thing he did was hand me the keys and say "C'mon, take her out for a test beat!" Then when I drove it like it wasn't mine he was dissapointed. When we pulled back into the driveway he looked at me and said "that was dissapointing, you want to try it again?"

Of course I wouldn't loan a kitchen knife to most of the chuckle heads I know. If you don't have a friend you can trust completely like I trust Eddie then I think you have something missing from your life.

Re: never lend your boat!

Very true, thats why I love a old saying my old man taught me..

There are friends and acquaintances.

A true friend you might have 5 of your entire life. How can you tell who is who?

A true friend is someone who, in a time of need will be there no matter the distance nor the time of day. If you need anything and they can get it for you, they will on the drop of a dime. Period.

A true friend is the one that when hearing of their or your death, you drop everything you are doing, no matter what it is, and sit, remember the good times, remember the life you shared together, and cry knowing that it will never be again.

The rest are just acquaintances and will come and go...

If you do not have at least one person in your life, that you can lean on, count on, and KNOW without a doubt that they fit the above friend, then your life is missing something..

Now with your car rental, well any body with the cash or credit can buy a boat too.

A good friend is some one who will come out in the middle of the night and bail your sorry *** out of jail.

A true friend is sitting next to you in the jail cell saying "Man, wasn't that a blast!" :)

Re: never lend your boat!

The short answer is a (qualified)..yes, I would loan by boat out. Limited Time and Leardriver both have an opinion here that I share.
I trust my friends....if I didn't they wouldn't be friends, the would be acquaintances. As a result, if something ever went wrong they would stand up, admit it and help resolve or fix it just as I would with them.
If you have 'friends' that drop borrowed stuff off broken without admitting it or fixing....you should find some new friends....because to be quite honest, they clearly dont 'have your back'.
Regardless, if your not sure about the 'friend' asking to borrow your boat (or ?) then simply tell him the rules...and ask him to shake on it.;)
Simple stuff.:)
my two bits.
