Needle valve

Can't seem to figure out why i can't screw in the needle valve-slow speed. The threads all seem good (on needle valve), can't see inside carb. The other sleeve that slides over needle valve does screw in.

I can't seem to find any info on this subject to let me know if something needs to be lined up or something silly like choke needs to be out (haha)...

The bushing and packing are still on the needle valve. I did unscrew the other sleeve and only tried screwing the needle valve in and still didn't catch..

try it without the packing on the needle, but be super carefull, the brass threads strip easily.

Just spent a few more hours, since my last post to get the needle valve to screw in without any luck. I tried taking the bushing and packing off...no luck. Took the carb off to investigate and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. The motor still starts and continues to run but only at a higher rpm. Soon as I throttle down to slow is sputters and shuts down.
I can spin the needle valve endlessly. The outer sleeve threads in and is nice and tight. The lower high speed adjustments still seems to work fine...ggrrrrr!
The brass needle valve appears to be in great shape..nice point to it and threads are good.

dumb question, but are you sure the knob isnt just spinning on the needle? i only ask that because i was asked to work on a 1957 18 hp, the owner said the linkage was broke or stripped, i did rekit the carb, but the prob with the needle was nothing more than the knob being set back to far for the screw to tighten it up enough to actually turn the needle when you turned the ls knob.

NWCOVE...I can see it happening cause the little grooves at the end are almost stripped. But NO, I do not have the knob on. Turning it in by hand or when fingers get sore..LOL..I clamp visegrips on.

When I do have the needle valve out I can see all the way in to the slot. Would it be possible for the inner threads to be stripped and not stripped on the needle valve??

...also, isn't this setting for the bottom high speed adjustment. The slow speed adjustment only has a knob that slides over the grooves.
