OK I figured it out from the parts drawing, the shift rod screws into it, and that was what stopped it coming out. Thanks for the link, I will have to get a manual to re-assemble and set it up, taking stuff apart is always the easy bit.

I like the idea of having an original hard copy manual, and there are a few for sale on ebay, but they are part #507551, and dated 1985, which I think would be for the 800 stringer. Would this book work for a 1984 400 stringer?
