need wiring info from throtle

Hello and thanks in advanceif you can help me out.

My problem is I have a 1989 Procraft f170 that i am fixing up, the boat came with a 1979 90hp Johnson Hydro electric drive.

I ran all the cables today and mounted the throttle box onto the boat, my question is there are wires coming from the case itself that go to the counsel, I need to know what the wires coming out of the throttle housing are for.

any help would be great, I am not very good at electrical stuff, but if i can find out what the wires at the throttle are this would help me greatly.

What colors? Its likely wiring for tach or trim guage..

A 79 should not be a hydro-electric drive-those ended in 72. If the control box is a 79, it should have a grey wire cutoff left inside the box. It is for the tach signal. You had to provide the hot and ground from the dash to drive the tach. Later OMC boxes had three wires with a plug: grey (tach signal) purple (hot) and black (ground).

1978 was last year of "arm rest" style boxes the 1979 was first year for side mounts with top mounted warm up lever and 3 prong assy plug.....

it is a side mount and has 3 wires a purple, Green and white.

I'd pull the box apart and see what the wires connect to and go from there. An original factory manual will have a control box wiring diagram in the back. What is the model number from the engine?

Some electric shift motors from the 60's and early seventies had three wire controls that were wired with blue, green, and purple with a green stripe. They were similar to the wiring in the thumbnail.

If the wiring is for a hydro-electric shift unit, it is not a 1979, it is a 1972 or older unit. The 73 and newer control boxes had two large black mechanical cables, one for shift and one for throttle. The older electric shift boxes had only one large mechanical cable-for the throttle. What is your model number?

here is all i could find on the motor.
50th aniverary 85 hp

so i researched that and found it to be a 72.

Are these motors decent?I was told it was all tunes up before it was winterized 2 years ago.
It needs paint, and looks clean, but i dont want to invest in a motor that is not woth the time or money.

so any advice would be great

ok now for the part i dont get?
On the 1989 procraft f170 i have there is a cluster of wires under the dash that extends to where the new control box is.Do these wires hook up to the control box?

The 72 control box has a grey wire pigtail cutoff inside the box. This is the signal wire for the tach. Once the box is opened, this wire can be connected to the "S" post on the tach. Most boats today run their dash gauges, fishfinders, radio, bilge pumps, etc from another main dash wire that connects direct to the battery. This way, the fuses and switches for these systems can be separated from that of the engine. The engine itself has a 20 amp fuse, sufficient to run the engine. If you load up additional dash gauges, pumps, accessories to the engine control box, you may find the engine fuse is too small to handle the load. Once that fuse blows, the engine will not start. (you may want to keep a spare in the boat.) These early electric shift engines were a solid engine, from a mechanical standpoint. I ran a 72 100 hp engine for years and loved it. The main problem is with the electric shift system itself. Many of these electric shift parts have been discontinued. Worse yet, not everyone is familiar with working on them, so a lot of shops won't take them in for service anymore. If the shift system works properly, it is worth putting normal maintenance dollars into it. FYI, the 85 and 100 hp engines that year had a smaller displacement (92 cubic inches) than the 115/125 (99.6 cubic inches) engines.
