need to shorten sending unit ?

hello everyone , I need to put a new sending unit in my gas tank , my gas tank is only 5 inches deep , the smallest moeller sending unit is 8 inches . can I take my tube cutter and shorten the shaft and reflare the bottom of it ? the tank is in my 1997 doral and it is a 20 gallon tank . thankyou .

thanks ,but that's the kind I just took out , they seem to get caught on the inside of the tank .

Sounds like the original was installed at the wrong angle if that happened. It's not a sender problem, it's how it's installed that's that's the problem.

The float has to point in a direction were it is free to move its full range of travel. That unit is adjustable to four positions of rotation, so one of them should provide clearance. Follow the directions for pivot hight adjustment and float arm adjustment.
