Need to re make ski locker on my 84 seville

One of the previous owners in their infinite wisdom decided that a ski locker was not needed on the boat and removed it so now there is just a piece of wood with carpet over it that was knocked down through the floor by the last owner when his friend decided to jump off the dock onto this part of the floor. I am trying to figure out how to replace the ski locker as I intend on using it for my fishing rods and skis. Has anybody ever had to tackle this that can give this noobie some advice?

This is the best I have right now but will take some more tomorrow and upload them. It needs much more interior work than this but this is the first task and its major part of the floor and my kids like to sit up front when underway.

Uhhhhh, I may very easily be wrong, but from that view it looks like the PO put new decking on top of the old and re-carpeted it. It is just a guess, but since the PO of my Bayliner did the exact same thing and it looks just like that as well, I would suspect you may have a rotten floor under it.

Are there any other "Soft Spots" in your floor? The recessed area shown in the photo is not typically where a ski locker would be located. If would be a bit further aft.

MOst of the floor looks good and no other soft spots anywhere. But it does appear to be re-decked.

For Sure it has been re-decked and re-carpeted. Once you get the carpet up we'll be better able to see what needs to be done.

Also, what does the transom look like? My guess is if the floor was re-decked, the transom may have issues as well, unless it has been re-done.

Everything I have seen looks good under the carpet and transom sounds solid tappin on it with a wrench.

Tappin on the transom with a wrench is not a valid method for determining the condition of the transom. You will need to gain access to the motor well and get down low on the transom and drill into the transom with a 1/4" drill about 1" deep and check the drill shavings in several places. If they are light colored and dry then just fill em up with 3M 5200 sealant and you're good to go. If they are dark or damp and wet then the transom will need to be replaced. I'd recommend drilling into the motor mounts and stringers in the motor well as well to check them out too!!! If the PO threw a deck over rotten stringers , and some of them do, then you have some issues. If not then you can proceed with the new configuration of the deck

The only wood part of the deck is over the fuel tank and in front of fuel tank I was ableto see under the floor with a flashlight. I dont see any questionale areas and what I can reach all sounds solid. I pulled carpet up over the back area and what is supposed to be the ski locker and the area of the ski locker looks good except the wood that was used to make it a solid deck. A few of the seats need to be redone and the board across the back that hide the bimini top when its folded down needs to be redone as well its rotted out pretty bad. I'll take some better pics this afternoon.

If you lift the engine cover you will see the wood stringers and motor mounts and be able to access the lower regions of the transom I highly recommend you inspect and core sample those areas. 29 year old boats with questionable maintenance need to have thorough inspections to insure their seaworthiness. Looking and tapping are not sufficient.

That's understandable and I'll be doing it this weekend. Was planning on getting some good pics of everything but have too much going on right now with family.

Took these this afternoon. Will core sample tomorrow after school. There are other areas I know need attention and will start on those soon.

Re: Need to re make ski locker on my 84 seville

Swallowed my pride and my wallet yesterday and took the boat and had it professionally checked out. They said the stringer were solid, transom was solid and no major issues that they found. To rebuild the ski locker all I would have to do is remake the frame and door. Did not charge me for the inspection.
