The other screw on the starboard side above the lower is just a vent as the housing gets filled from the lower drain hole and an indicator if the case was full. If you have a dip stick in the top of the exhaust housing cover then you can use it to gauge when there is enough oil in the gear case. The dip stick was a running change that was added around 75.

do i change oil in the gearbox that goes from engine to out drive and if so where

You do: you will find a port on the top of the intermediate immediately outside of the transom of the boot. You will have to suck the old lube out and then replace it - I've used a turkey baster kind of rig in the past.

it looks like there is a drain/fill screw on right side but up and under where unit swivels from, screw has been messed with before , and will be a ***** to get at

If there is a drain screw below the intermediate ball gear shaft then the housing has been changed some time after 78. That is good for you. The shaft may have the double tapered bearings. However you need to fill it from the bottom.

the screw is up where the cap is on rh side , the cap to remove the unit , you have to lift unit all the way up , then look up in there, not by ball gear
