Tongue weight is around 100 lbs depending on how much gas is in it. I really hate to start moving things around as they are rusty and you know how that will go. Also, the boat tows perfectly now behind our Lexus RX400h which is not an ideal tow vehicle :)

100 lbs is WAY to light. Not sure what this whole rig ways but if its 2000# you should have minimum 200#

I was worried about that when I bought it last year. I took it out on the highway and it was not prone to fishtailing when I yanked the steering wheel around. I assume the long tongue helps this. We also own a short cargo trailer and that is dangerous with a light tongue weight. What are the other potential issues caused by not enough tongue weight?

It may help a little bit but the stability issue is one of center of gravity and you need the center of gravity more forward of the axle than what you have now. Increasing the tongue weight will solve this problem and should be easy to fix with what you have.

trust us here... move the boat forward... put the transom directly over the last cross member of the trailer... just watch that the boat doesn't hit the trailer frame in front... you MAY have to adjust the bunks higher in front if it gets too close

100 lbs IS way light... I set up my trailers at no less than 10% up to 15%.... the lightest anyone generally recommends (too light in my opinion) is 7.5% of the total weight

it will pull even better with more tongue weight.... Then work on shortening the front as needed

it would be fine to put it behind the winch strength wise but would be a real pita as you would have to unbolt an remove the winch stand to fold it every time. Maybe you could have a custom winch stand made that attached further back and angled forward... also understand that the jack needs to be behind the pivot as well

Getting the Winch stand to swing with the hinge is going to be a pain, as stated.

I would be more concerned with the amount of stress that hinge is going to take from the winch.
The hinge design assumes a few hundred pounds of tongue weight and the shocks that occurs as you go over bumps in the road.

When recovering the boat, the winch could transfer over 1000 pounds to a winch stand that is also a lever arm to the disadvantage of the tongue. You might snap the hinge the first time you try to recover the boat.

The same problem will be going on every time you start and stop while towing. The boat is held in place by the winch stand.
If the hinge failed on the highway and the winch stand went with it, the boat just might make the 100 yard slide down the pavement without the trailer.

I would consider the other options first.
A Tongue Hinge may still be in your future, but swing ONLY the Tongue as it was intended.

Very good point!

Its also a much larger moment arm the more aft it is.

Well I looked into moving the boat forward. The curved part of bow is hitting the forward roller at the cross bar up front so I will need to go up and over that. The forward bunk mount is as high as it will go and the forward roller is as low as it will go. The rear bunk mounts could go down an inch or so along with the roller at the transom. This may tilt the bow up enough but to test I need to actually start unbolting things. All of this is rusty enough so that it probably will break when I try to get it apart. Is it worth all this effort to get it forward 12 or so inches? Thanks again for all the great ideas.

sell the trailer, buy the shorter one you need with a break-away tongue already installed

it's well worth the effort IMHO although in the pic it didn't look like it would be more than about 6"??

having a roller in the front however is a bonus..... you also may be able to raise the bow a little by moving the bunks inboard a little OR you can pick up some longer brackets for the front for cheap

soak the hardware down with penetrating oil for a few days before starting to unbolt

If you have a MIG welder or know somebody that does, you could rebuild the entire winch tower assembly and refit it so accomplish both correct boat positioning and shortening the trailer tongue as well. Just a thought...

Can you take a closer picture that shows the stern relative to the back support on the trailer?

Requested pictures below. Looks like if I go down 2" in the back the front will go up 1" which may not be enough to hit the fixed front roller just right. The rear roller would need to be flipped around to accommodate the notch in the transom. I may be able to replace the bunk mounts for the front to get more height. The bunks have soft spots and need to be replaced anyway.

based on your pictures this is what I would do to readjust things:

first things first, you boat is too far back and needs to move forward about 6 inches so the back edge of rear roller wheel is directly under the back edge of the transom and not where it is now under the hull. the bunk boards can be left too long or trimmed off to look better when you get it positioned correctly but that's your choice.

front roller is too low so at the very least you need to raise it so the flat part of the top of the bracket is at least level with the top of the frame rail then lower the rear roller until it lines up with even weight on all three rollers. this adds an angle to the boat and aids in better drainage when on the trailer. you might be surprised by how much the bow will rise, dropping 2" in the rear should raise the bow 2" because the middle roller acts as a pendulum swing. if I were doing it I would first raise the bow roller until your bow eye just fits up under the bow stop correctly then move on from there lowering the rear roller and only the middle roller if its needed.

to do the bunk boards you just follow the same pattern, raise the front and lower the rear so everything is evenly supported.

I want to clarify that in giving my directions, they are based on making sure you are keeping things supported while adjusting things. so while I say you do not want to move the middle roller, its left for last because it is keeping everything supported while you are adjusting things even though in the end you may need to move the middle roller but I would make that the last thing to adjust if you can.

after you do all this and everything is situated correctly, then and only then, should you do any modifications to the bow stop and post setup. I think after you readjust the boat the front end will sort itself out and be a much better fit.

once you get everything all sorted out you will have all the room you need to trim the tongue shorter or add the swing tongue if you still find its needed
