hi there and thanks for help, I have a 22 feet cruiser barnegat the gas tabk is in the center of the boat and under the gas tank is a piece of wood plywood the size is about 5 feet long x 3 1/2 feet wide is rotten and and very bad shape the rest of the boat is looking good, I took some core samples and the rest look good, Im ready to fix that piece I have marine grade plywood ready to be cut on the exact size and I bought some epoxy resin I need to buy cloth? or not, if so what type of clothe you guys recommend, Now my really question is in case that I need to use cloth I have to give a first hand of resin to the plywood, then lay the cloth and put some more resin thanks.

Re: need some help with my first fiberglass repair!!!

When I replaced the floor on mine I used both resin and cloth. The cloth I used around the edges to get the two pieces together. The cloth is what gives it strength. But I am not sure which is right but when I did mine I went on line and found a site that sort of walked me through the proses and it said not to use marine plywood, the article said that the resin didn't adherer to it as well as it did to regular plywood. Right or wrong that was what I did. That was 5 years ago. I did resin both side and the edges of all the plywood I used.

There is some really good info on fiberglass here if you use the search function. My dad has worked with industrial fiberglass for 29 years. I have helped many times when he has been too busy to handle all the work that has came in at certain times. FRP is nasty stuff. The basic application is you wet the surface with resin, put mat on top wet again and use a special roller to work the air bubbles out of the mat. Make sure you properly prep the surface or it will not bond properly. Make sure you use protective equipment for yourself or you will see how nasty the stuff can be.
