need some help with creating VIN and HIN for a new boat. would really appreciate it

I am in the process of building a boat from scratch and i am having some issues trying to find out where i have to go to have the VIN and HIN made for my boat. i have researched on a few websites to maybe have and idea where but got nowhere so if anyone can give me a hand with this i'd really appreciate it thank you.

I've gone through this on at least one home made trailer (in Calif) and I would assume the process is the same. Go to your local Dept. of Motor Vehicles and just tell them what you're doing. They should have the answers, probably issue a hull I.D. number and require you to put it on the hull in a permanent manner.

Check with your local DMV if they dont do boat registrations they will know who does in your area . You will most likely have to take the boat down to register it as a homebuit and will most likely have a pile of papers and red tape to go through and hoops to jump through.

I've done it several times. I just go down to the local licensing agent (we don't need to go directly to the DMV), they want to see all the receipts for materials to set the value for a tax base. I never have any receipts though and I just estimate the value, they don't like it, but its always worked, DMV may not be as easy to work with though. They'll send you all the paper work and give you the HIN#, plus tell you where to put it. Its actually very simple to do here.

I didn't see if your from either the US or Canada, but the DMV is the best place to start and to save a trip maybe just call them to find out if you need to go in to the DMV or else where and what paperwork to bring with you, however if you are in Canada just head to your nearest service canada office and they have all the paper work there just need some basic information about your boat to start the process.

Yeah thats what ill have to do tomorrow just go to the DMV and see what they tell me and hopefully start the process to get things done. thank you all for the help if anything ill come back here lol.
