Willyclay, if you click on the pic and then zoom in, you can see holes that are cast into the swivel bracket. The spring attaches to one of those holes. I've attached a pic with red circles to show where those holes are. I think that if you zoom in on this pic, it will get too pixelated. I've attached it just to show where those holes are. You should, however, be able to zoom in on the pic in post #17 pretty well.

Re: Need Pics Early 60's 75hp

OK you guys, here is the answer to the mystery spring: As you all realize by now, the flip lever pulls the reverse lock claws up to release them from the tilt rod. There are also heavy springs holding hose claws down over the tilt rod.

When you are going across the lake with the motor locked down (as you are supposed to be doing), and you hit an underwater obstruction, the tilt lock claws have enough pull to stretch those heavy springs, which unlocks the tilt so it can come up.

With me so far?? At the moment that the heavy springs are stretched and the claws are raised, the release cable has slack in it. That slack allows the lock/release lever to swing forward because it is now loose and floppy. Very bad. Unfortunately, also at that moment, the motor is rapidly tilting up. If the lock/release lever is pointing forward as the motor tilts, it hits the transom, and SNAP! there goes your lock/release lever.

SO....the little cable spring keeps tension on the cable when all this is going on. With tension on the cable, the lock/release lever will stay tight against the swivel bracket, not swing forward to hit the transom and bust off.

Got it??

If the lock/release lever is pointing forward as the motor tilts, it hits the transom, and SNAP! there goes your lock/release lever.

Just look at the pictures I posted above to see the results of that scenario. Thanks, F_R! I really appreciate you taking the time explain it.
