Hello, new forum member...with a 1977 Evinrude 25hp, model 25702H. Bought this motor over the winter for my 14' skiff Had it at a shop for a general status check. Motor misses/coughs after its warmed up. Compression is 125/125, spark is good, coils, plugs and power pack swapped out for diagnosis. Water leaks from the base of the motor block and is sucking air at lower crankshaft seal. Is this worth pursuing or should I call it quits and move on? Estimate 4-600 for repairs.

Thanks in advance.

I assume (dangerous, I know) the coughing is a lean sneeze caused by the seal leak. If that is a reliable diagnosis, it is a fairly easy repair. The leaking powerhead gasket would be part of getting to the seal, so it's all one job, not two.

I kind of choke at the estimate. I'd hesitate on this one.

Need 2nd opinions on motor

Hello, new forum member...with a 1977 Evinrude 25hp, model 25702H. I bought this motor over the winter for my 14’ skiff. Had it at a local marina for a check-over. Unfortunately the results are just a bit disappointing, it misses/coughs after warmed up.The good: compression is 125/125, spark is good (power pack, coils and plugs replaced for diagnostics). The bad: water is leaking from the base of the engine block and seems to be sucking air from at the lower crankshaft seals. Not sure if this is worth going forward or if I should cut my losses and move on. Any advice, comments appreciated.

George

Here is a 2nd opinion - Do the work yourself or get rid of the motor. Will the motor be worth what you paid + 4-600 bucks.

A 3rd opinion too - Please don't start more than one thread on the same issue.

F_R thanks for the reply. The motor seems to be in good shape otherwise and it ran good for the first few minutes. It kind of reminds me of a blown head gasket on a car motor. If there is no damage I'd take a chance on fixing it (maybe for a little less $)

I have seen a number of these outboards with lean sneeze problems for some reason. Seems that was put behind in the past with the next generations of OMC outboards to some extant. The later generation models (starting in 1974) of 15 hp which I have fooled with alot seldom have this problem for example. Yours being 1977 is right on the edge as I think they changed the motor and carb in 75, some here will know if I'm not right on the dates and details. A lot of times it is the carb. I just posted about my 20 hp model 1972. Throws me off to figure it out.
