going to look at a package tomorrow that includes a 1989 yamaha 90 hp o/b. any words to the wise regarding this motor or yamaha in general? past boats that i looked at were merc or johnson powered, so i'm in the dark with yamaha. also, anyone have model number code info so i can verify the year, etc?

As long as its well maintained it should serve you well. Its a lot lighter than the johnson V-4's and well suited to lighter boats.
Very happy with my 60hp and 115hp Yamahas.

I agree with ivar. I've been a Merc man for almost 30 years but I got a Yama 90F last year and love it. Don't know how to do the codes and such but with that age, it wouldn't hurt to do a compression check. Good luck.

Yammys are very good engines.

The 90 is quite small, inside and out, for a 90. Only about 70 ci.

It hasn't the torque for hole shot that the much bigger displacement (105ci) JohnnyRude V4s have, but it is a light, smooth and reliable engine.
