Saw this rig at a used car lot/ repair shop. I asked the guy what the asking price was and he was a bit of a jag*** and his asking price was $1000. I responded by asking if we were talking about the same rig about the same way he gave his price which probably doesn't do me any good but I was a bit shocked. He said I could have the boat but the trailer and motor was worth $1000. Using beginner eyes I see alot of problems with the whole sheebang and I'm thinking $350 total package. So, whos "on the pot"? Based on how the boat was taken care of, I can only imagine whats going on with the motor internally. Let the opinions fly. Be gentle this is a learning experience for me.

Need a bunch more pics! From what I see so far, a grand is not out of hand.
Is the trailer roadworthy? Will the motor run? Are the hull problems cosmetic
or structural? How is the electrical system? Does the seller just want to off the boat? There's your insulting low ball offer and your business like offer.
No matter what the purchase price you're going to shovel in lots more money.
Crawl all over this thing and post more pics.

I do intend to find out more about this rig but there is no battery or fuel on board. Firing it up right now might not be the best thing judging on how things look. Its obviously been sitting in the elements for sometime. The trailer, not road worthy unless you can afford the tickets. There are repairs obvious on the keel with bare glass showing in a number of spots. All kinds of cracks in the gel coat, rubrail is pulled away in various spots. The transom I would guess is shot due to the large steel plate that has been bolted and siliconed on. I'll go get somemore pics here shortly.

Ok Got more pics but I'm having a problem. By the time I get my post ready to go and hit submit it makes me log on again and I loose everthing I just prepared. So, I'm not trying to pump my own thread I'm just trying to get these pics on for some help. If it takes a hand full of post than I guess that what I'll do. Now for reference, my thought of $350 wasn't supposed to be a rude lowball. But this I got ready to fish for 700. Not half the issues as this other rig.

lights and wiring are shot.

rollers are shot

May be a crack in the frame?

And I guess if the rest of the boat is in such rough condition, shouldn't I operate under the assumption the motor has been care for in the same way. The current owner doesn't seem like the kind of guy who will respond well to to many questions or requests for proof that the motor is indeed worth the asking.

After looking at the steel plate, (transom gone) and the condition of the trailer, (deep rust at welds) my advice would be to walk and find a more restorable project unless you really are a glutton for punishment. I don't think I would offer to carry it off for free. This boat has been rid hard and put away wet without a thought to care or maintenance.

That's just an opinion ya'll (but I don't meed a career project)

Same opinion as above, transom is shot to heck evidenced by that reinforcing plate, the rest of it is a joke.
If the boat and trailer look like that, you don't need any engine the same owner is selling.
$1000 will get a you a lot of boat these days.

Re: Need $ opinion on possible practice project

only for reference, I paid 1000$ for the boat in my sig and if that is any indication of what type of boat you get for the money then that one is right in the ballpark sans the high tech transom repair! In all seriousness, look at my thread to see what you are going to be up against. Im not saying that it cant be done and that it isnt any fun, but man, there has to be a better wreck of a boat around you than that! Nevermind that my motor needs two new pistons and machine work, it ran and the trailer was in excellent condition along with new tires not to mention all systems were (mostly) complete and attached to the boat in (mostly) all the right places.

Keep in mind that I bought mine in a much different financial climate as well. 2 and a half years ago was a bad time to be a boat buyer. Today is arguably THE best time in recent history to be a man with a 1000$ in his pocket looking for a used comodity. just my 2 pennies. Run, dont walk:eek:

DOnt forget to look at craigslist in your area, it is an often overlooked market.

I paid $1K for my boat as well. I wouldn't take that heap if it was given to me. Buy a restore which still looks stock, as fixing other peoples' fixes will have you hunting them down for flogging in no time.

Floggin huh, thats not the word I would use to describe what I would do to the son of.....that hacked my boat together. As I have said, at least I am not the guy that got taken. It was the guy before me! But I still overpaid! Low,, I think you got a great deal.

Skip it . What a mess. It will take thousands to make it nice. Spend your money on a working boat. Check Craigslist.

So, what you're say is, maybe not a good idea?:D:D:D The opinions I greatly appreciate. I will look elsewhere. But..... he did say the hull was free so maybe I'll see if I can drag that home just to practice on. You know, before I screw up the one I want to keep.:)

Find out how much your landfill will chargeto dispose of it first and then think about the labor (hot, nasty dirty working with rotten deck and fiberglass shards) Trust me, learn the easy way in your chair in front of the computer here on iboats. There are tons of threads on restoration, and tearing a boat apart dosen't take a a rocket scientist. Save your energy for a boat your serious about.

Just a thought ya'll

Yeah, you don't need 800lbs of trash to practice. Get a nice boat, and practice on some plywood scraps. Its also a lot easier to get rid of. Believe me, after half a day of messing around with resin and glass, you will be ready to tackle a project. Save yourself a headache and wasted effort and find a more project worthy boat.
