If anyone knows a marine mechanic that travels please let me know!!!

I need a diagnosis on my engine.

Its a 1998 175hp ficht Johnson....

Engine has been running flawlessly for 3 years after the upgrades.

This past week I noticed that my oil line was diconnected and engine was running without oil for 1 to 2 minutes before it shut off.

I know its probably a seized engine, but i did not see or smell smoke.

SO IF ANYONE KNOWS A MARINE MECHANIC that can just hook up a computer to diagnose the problem, PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Was it just idling? In that case, you may be OK.

well..it just slowly lost power and then it shut off...Now it wont even turnover.

I know almost nothing about boats but when I turn the key, the flywheel does not spin..But I do hear a light noise trying to spin..

I am not very optimistic.

Well, that's not such good news, then. If it was running without oil, there could be considerable internal damage. It's one thing for it to idle briefly, but if you were underway, running without oil, that's another story.

That the engine won't turn over now is also bad news. I suspect you're in for a considerable expense, if not a new engine.

Sorry.

I'd guess the yellow pages would be your best bet, then. I'm not sure the computer will be needed, though. It won't be able to tell whether there is mechanical damage.

Where is the boat, now?

Re: need NEW YORK mobile mechanic!!!

al....Try calling ALL Island Marine (516) 764-3300, they're in Oceanside L.I.. They are a Johnrude dealer and they have really good techs, not sure if they are mobile but I know they are a good shop, and they might make an exception and drive over to Queens to check it out for you, they delivered my boat to me out on Eastern LI instead of making me pick it up, so they may be willing to give you a hand since you don't have a trailer. I bought my Ficht from them. If they are not mobile then that place in Freeport looks like your next closest choice. I've been to that marina in Bayside before and I'm pretty sure there is a shop there, try asking the guys in there if they know any OMC techs. I don't think hooking a PDA or laptop up to it is gonna do you any good if it won't start, the computer won't be able to read anything without the engine running, most likely they're just gonna tell you that you probably have mechanical damage and they're gonna have to pull it apart to see what kind of damage it is.

There is a low oil and I think no oil flow alarm, on that and most any motor, I am really surpised you didn't get a long loud alarm before you lost any power, I would think your S.L.O.W. system would have kicked in also, and you would not have been able to go over 2000 RPM, but even that RPM would kill and engine with no oil. Good luck man. Sorry to hear it.

Yes an alarm rang for like 10 seconds and I could NOT go over 2000 RPM's.....The Engine shut off within seconds of the boat not going over 2,000 RPM's.

You think that the S.L.O.W. system could save the boat?

When I turn the key I get a spinning noise but the wheel (I think flywheel) wont turn.

Is there an emergency system that has to be disengaged?

I know I am pushing my luck, but it doesnt hurt for me to ask these questions.

Thank you for all your help, everybody

Re: need NEW YORK mobile mechanic!!!

If you are hearing a spinning, that's probably your starter motor spinning. It probably kicks the little gear(bendix gear) up to engage the flywheel and then encounters too much resistance and kicks off, but is still spinning since you still have the key turned. Have someone try and start it while you look at the starter motor, I'll bet the bendix jumps up hits the flywheel and then kicks down but still spins. One or more pistons may be seized or close to it. How in the world did the oil line fall off, and where did it fall off from, inside the motor or at the resevoir?

Also, for a reliable, fair-priced, brilliant OMC mechanic call Ralph at Lindenhurst Outboard 631-225-0077 and he'll help or refer you to someone he has faith in.
Chin up, I was in the same situation 3 yrs back and Ralph did good by me.
Good luck
