Look for used parts where you can find them. It's part of the game. You may have to buy a parts motor to get the lower unit -- not a bad idea if you have a place to store it. Get a parts and/or a service manual first. Get one speicifically for your motor (preferable) or a manual that covers your motor along with others (easier to find, but more difficult to decipher). You will need to know whether your motor has the electric or manual shift, as that will dictate what lower unit you need. (If the control unit has buttons for F-N-R, you have an electric shift model.)

For all of that, though, are you sure your current unit is dead? Don't fix something that ain't broke.

Any 20" V4 from 1973 to 1975 is a direct replacement. The 1977 20" 85 and 115's will work too but not the 140's.

Good luck!

Thanks to all of you for your fast answer.

I'm sure it's dead. Right now the boat is in repair and the expert there told me that my lower unit was completely jammed because of a lack of oil...

He says it would cost me around 1500 to 2000$ (can) to get it fix. That's why i've decided to try to find a used one myself.

Tks again.

Yoan

Faced with those potential costs, I would look for a used replacement, as discussed -- should get by for 10% of that estimate, or less, if you do the work yourself. With a little experience and some nerve (and a manual), you can probably take the present unit apart and make your own judgment about damages. If it were me, though, I think I would take the mechanic's word for it and find a replacement unit -- then maybe take the current one apart after the fact just out of curiousity.

1973-1977 20" V4 lower units will fit (Evinrude and Johnson 85-140hp), except for the 1977 140hp. I've got a couple in western New England if of interest (860-683-1860 x255).
