So I'm going to buy cheap rod holders from Walmart for my little boat. I was original going to buy 4 and space them out on each side but now that I have thought about it I would like to just buy 2 and make them quick detach so I can be able to move them to different locations without taking out any bolts. If anyone has any good ideas for making the rod holders in the link below QD please share!! If you have some that are similar that are QD pics would be good. Thanks!

the rod holder in the link is intended to be mounted to a pier post. it can also be used to store your rod. not intended to be mounted in a boat for use while fishing. in a boat, you want the adjust-ability to get the rod angled out and away from the boat.

adjustable rod holders are as cheep as $5 from walmart.

FWIW, the one in the link is a piece of PVC pipe with a hole and a slot. the flare can be done with a heat gun.

Guy I work with uses the same exact rod holders with a corner brace so they angle out. I'm not looking for adjustable, I'm looking for quick detach so I can completely remove it by unclamping somehow and move it to literally any spot on the boat. I guess in a way it could be considered adjustable.

I appreciate your reply and if the truly sell $5 QD holders that allow removal of the whole holder and can be moved anywhere on the boat with no additional accessories then I would buy them. Just point me in the right direction.

Are these holders just for storing, or do they need to hold up to a fish...and if yes, what fish?

Do the holders truly need to be placed anywhere, or would a few selected spots be ok?

Can you do any fabrication work? Even as simple as cutting pvc pipe at an angle? Can't imagine how you will stay in your budget otherwise.

I can fix holders anywhere I would like to if I have to. I don't really have a budget but would like to stay cheap, I could always but $30 clamp on rod holders if I had to. Yes I can do fabrication work depending on how extreme but I'm a fast learner also. I will be fishing with them. Walleye, Trout, perch, possibly steelhead, pike, and muskie but there's not a lot of those in this lake. The guy I work with who uses them with corner braces fishes the same lake, he has a rod locking system that opens quickly that I'm going to use if I do make something.

cheap aluminum clamp on from walmart $5.43.
Will kind of work when new, but cheap is cheap, and these don't work well or last long.

Better plastic adjustable unit from walmart, $18.36, minus the 92 cent discount if you pick it up at your local walmart, so only $17.42.

With any rod holder, make sure you set the drag on the reel very loose.

When you start buying nuts, bolts, corner braces, drill bits, and hardware for locking devices, you go way over budget in a hurry.
Better to spend the $18, and have a sturdy and functional item, it will likely only cost a few $ more than the pic.
Maybe buy only one.

I already have a workshop full of tools and hardware (half of which I rarely use) so shouldn't need to buy any of that but yeah your probably right, worth the $30 to buy quality rather then lose expensive fishing rods and reels. I'll have to think about maybe another way to make some that would still be cost effective. Money isn't really an issue, I just like tinkering.
