I have a 1988 evinrude 20hp e20crcca outboard. Just discovered a oil leak from this hole. Should I be concerned??

next time you swap impeller clean out GC cavitities and drain hole.

Some actually run a drill bit slightly larger in the drain hole to reduce plugging from carbon juices

Now I'm changing the gear lube and started to get oil leaking from propeller after oil stopped draining from the lower screw. Should I be concerned?

Time to do a Pressure-Vacuum Test on the Lower Unit. That Gear Oil looked awful

Motor is 35 years old.----Take lower unit off.---Take it apart.----Install a complete seal kit.----Gears and shafts are expensive.

Did any water come out of the gearcase when you drained the oil? It still looks like 2 stroke oil to me.

Has it been run in a barrel for awhile?

at least it is not cream color... a pressure test should clear the air followed with some reload of oil... some run time and a second purge/refill.

Gee, smell the oil. 2 cycle oil smells like oil or more likely like gasoline. Gear oil smells like rotten eggs. If 2 cycle oil, go boating. If gear oil, you need to find and repair the leak.

My 35 year old Merc gearcase leaked twice at the shift rod, in the last 15 years. Easy fix. My 25 year old Johnny gearcase had a leak at the driveshaft seal. Not as easy a fix, but it shows that seals can last a long time.

Pressure test it and see where she leaks. On Mercs, they often leak at the driveshaft seal, which is installed in the water pump base.
