hey guys i have a 1968 merc 110 9.8h.p. and i have a couple of questions. One i have this (sludge) like when oil and water mix coming out of the prop just wondering what that is and two when i'm running the motor i have water coming out of the pee hole as people call it (i guess its the water cooling down the engine) but there is also a bit of steam that comes out with it and the water coming out is pretty hot. I'm jsut wondering if anyone has any insight

Thank you

Re: need help

Well, the sludge problem sounds like a leaky prop-shaft seal in your gear-box housing. The hot water and steam sounds like you might have a stuck thermostat. Hope that helps.

Re: need help

I had the same problem with my prop shaft seal. I had a bunch of fishing line stuck in there. Its not a hard job to do with a service manual. I have a 68 mercury 20 hp. Its very similar to yours I believe.

The steam in the pee hole seems sort of weird. I'm not sure, I'm assuming that Wingedwheel knows more then me (because most people do:D), but in all the time working on my motor (which is way too much) I've never seen any reference to a thermostat. When you fix your seal, replace your impeller...trust me. I found out the hard way.

Re: need help

Go to Boats.net, look at the diagram for your engine and it will show you the location of the thermostat.

Ayuh,... My guess is, that motor needs a New propshaft Seal,+ a New Impeller...
