need help

have a 79 mercury outboard 90hp. Have a real problem starting it, got it started only once. gears and compression is good. Can't figure out what is wrong. Also bought new battery's and they go dead after a few minutes of trying to start it it. 1st boat owner problems, need help hawkins__69@hotmail.com

Welcome to iboats.<br />Try spraying some mix right into the throat of the carb and see if it sputters or tries to start. If it does, your problem is fuel related.If not, it is probably ignition.
