I have a Volvo 1997 DP-D1 sterndrive. The starboard lift cylinder has started leaking around the shaft. I understand that these cylinders cannot be rebuilt and need to be replaced. Two questions. 1. Should the cylinders be replaced in pairs? and 2. how is the inboard end of the cylinder removed?
Thanks.

If it's leaking due to a bad seal, I would just replace the one cylinder, but that's being said without seeing anything.

Here is how they are removed.

Chris;

many thanks for the reply and attachment. It appears to be leaking from the seal, so I think I will nurse it along for another couple of weeks and then pull it after winterizing and see if a hydrolic shop can rebuild it. If not, I guess I replace it.

Thanks,
Henry

Who's Chris ?

Keep an eye on your oil reservoir for the trim, if oil leaks out water can leak in and water is really hard on the trim pumps.
