Is it bare metal?
If it is then you will want to prep it and use zinc chromate primer prior to applying the regular primer/paint.
Alodine is used by the pros to prep bare metal instead of the zinc, plenty of debates on this subject.
Lots of choices on paints out there too, many of us use regular rustoleum enamel and it can be sprayed or rolled and tipped.
