hi i recently bought a 1976 tri hull bow rider with high hopes of creating a really cheap fishing boat.. i need to replace the floor, but with much needed help reading posts on here, i think i got that part down.. my question is... ive read in another forum somewhere of someone using oil based machinery paint for the exterior.. has anyone on here done this, and how well would it work? the paint im thinking is like one would use in a factory, or maybe the paint on tractors? like i said, im planning on using this boat for catfishing only, and it would only be in water 2-3 days at a time..

i bought the boat for $300, added 2 tires on the trailer for $100.. the motor runs, the seats and pedistals are going to run me $80 for 2.. i dont see the need for a 3-400 paint job...

all opions are welcomed, as im new to this subject! thanks all in advance!

ill post pictures as soon as i get them resized

Does it need paint? Maybe you could just buff up the original gel coat?

I agree, unless you really hate the white I would buff the gel that is on it, it should come out really nice.

But to answer your question, yes I think that paint would work fine, just scuff up the boat good before you put it on.

:D the white im not so much worried about.. its the "pink" stripe down the side, and i also would like to touch up the interior.. the new seats are white with blue trim and the new carpet going in is dark blue... im also going to re-do the vinyl along the in sides in a blue/white...

thanks for the input guys

I say leave the white gel coat and paint the 'pink' stripe and/or cap-couldn't tell from pic. Two to three days in the water is pushing it for the topside paints (rustoleum, etc,) from what I've read. However, if you're just doing the stripe/cap, then rustoleum or any marine topside paint is going to work.

Ya, just mask off the boat and that is easy to paint the pink(YIKES!) stripe, certainly understandable.
